1998 Volkswagen Passat Wagon

Faults:

Everything.

The most recent, the turbo engine, had to be replaced.

The sunroof has been replaced 3 times.

There was a problem with the fuel line, it took three dealers and countless hours to figure out and fix.

General Comments:

This car car is extremly unreliable.

I have had just about every major component replaced and it only has 40,000 miles on it!

And I have been to all the service depatments within a 30 mile radius of my house and cannot find one that was helpful or would answer the phone.

1998 Volkswagen Passat GLS V6

Summary:

I love my car, not reliable, the warranty is good for nothing

Faults:

This is the third Volkswagen that I have owned or that a family member has owned. A GTI, a '94 Passat, and a '99 Passat. Each one has had water leakage just below the windshield into the car's electrical system. All 3 of the cars did not start and the electrical system went completely dead when it rained out. I still have the 24,000 mile/2 year warranty on my '99 Passat and Volkswagen will not cover the damage. They are insisting that is not covered. My car is NOT driveable. They are insisting that the problem, caused by rain, is not a defect in the car, but is due to "nature". Thus, it is not covered under the warranty. So, I guess what they are saying to me is that you can't drive a $30,000 new car in the rain?? It doesn't make sense to me. What good is Volkswagen's warranty? I also paid over $800 for the extended warranty for nothing.

My windshield also cracked after 6 months of owning the car and it did not start a few times during the winter.

General Comments:

Volkswagen needs better customer service and warranty protection. It seems that the warranty covers nothing.

Maybe the water is coming in where the windshield cracked?

Are Volkswagens in America actually manufactured in America? Because I see so many posts from Americans complaining about the reliability of their cars, while everyone else seems content!

Hi there, I am sending this comment from Europe, and I am telling you that Volkswagens are very reliable and affordable cars. It's just that you need to have a slight idea about using and maintaining cars because most of the problems is due to drivers' ignorance more than physical defects. I bet you haven't even looked to see where the water is coming from, to use a bit of sealant and to stop water protrusion to the ignition system. But it's easier to claim warranty, isn't it?

1998 Volkswagen Passat GLS Sedan 1.8 turbo

Faults:

The radio had to be replaced within the first month - it seems that VW may have cut corners on a few superficial features, but not on the features that count (drivetrain, etc.). And the wipers were bad when I received the car - no big deal.

General Comments:

This is my first new car, and it is terrific. I would recommend this car to anyone. It is A LOT of car for the money - tremendous value. I gave the car 8's and 9's, but only because it isn't a high-end luxury car - in it's class I would give it 10's all around.

1998 Volkswagen Passat GLS 1.8 Turbo

Faults:

Two weeks after I purchased the Passat (late March, 1998) I smelled a foul odor in the trunk. When I lifted up the trunk liner, I saw about an inch of standing water in the spare tire well. Mold was on the tire and on the trunk liner and the wheel was rusting. The dealer found a leak underneath the trunk, repaired it, and provided a new tire, wheel, and trunk liner.

General Comments:

The Passat is the best buy and best performing mid-sized sedan under $25,000. The amenities that come with the Passat equal a Mercades C class or a BMW 3 series. The suspension is firm and very German. The engine, with the intercooled turbo, is more than adequate with 150 horsepower. In short, a Passat is an Audi A4 internally and a VW asthetically. It is a blast to drive.
