1985 Volkswagen Scirocco 1.8 Liter

Summary:

A Wonder Of Engineering

Faults:

Rebuilt engine at 300,000.

Turned rotors.

New Wheel Cylinder / Shoes.

Many sets of tires/ air filters/ fuel filters/ wiper blades.

New clutch.

New cold start valve.

Needs new suspension, but not urgently.

Odometer broke at about 243,000, so 365,000 is a projection.

Throttle adjustment screw broke a few months ago.

New seat covers.

AC doesn't work.

General Comments:

This car has nice handling and it can still get up to speed after all these years.

It smokes a lot when it starts, so I gotta change the oil every 1000 miles or so.

Most people will brag about speed, well milk 365 K miles out of a ricer... I'm going to keep this car to a million miles.

So much of this car has been replaced, but the soul is still there.

So I just drove the car 600 miles from Yorktown to Cleveland. I want to make a reality TV show out of my car.

1985 Volkswagen Scirocco

Summary:

Beyond a bargain for what this car is capable of..

Faults:

I haven't had this car for very long, but I have made some repairs, which I think may be expected from a 16 year old car.

Replaced the oil temp unit (did this twice, as I learned that the first guy that "repaired" the problem used not-so-top-quality parts). Because the units (there's 2 of them) had become disengaged from the motor, oil was leaking -- to the point where I was having to put about one to two quarts of oil in EACH WEEK before I knew what the problem was. Oil light finally went off and took it to a mechanic and discovered what the problem was. No problems with that any more.

Apart from that, only replacing the core alternator, timing belts and gaskets.

General Comments:

An awesome and beautiful car to own and behold. I get compliments on it all the time. Fortunately for me, the previous owner took extremely good care of this car and had all records (even saved the showroom price sticker).

Handling is excellent, I guess the only complaint I would have is the fact that no one is really 100% comfortable riding in that car. I'm glad to have this as my first car and I don't think I would ever sell it.

I don't care what anybody says, these cars are hunks of crap, from the electrical system to the transmission, mine has been nothing but trouble. In fact, it would be quicker to tell you what components didn't break, as compared to components that did!

1985 Volkswagen Scirocco 1.8 L 8v

Summary:

A fun car to own, a fun car to drive

Faults:

Things that have gone wrong, are only items that were 16 years of age on the car.

Previous owner did almost no maintenance for the past 7 years on the car, so the usual items, such as: power steering pump, water pump, belts, hoses and such here left to dry up and rot.

General Comments:

After changing the "basic" tired parts on the car, the life of it started to stir once again...

Low band pick up much increased after changing the throttle body for an Audi 5000 throttle body.

Still gets 30mpg, pretty good for a 16 year old car.

The comfortable highway speed is ~ 70MPH.

1985 Volkswagen Scirocco 1.8 gasoline

Summary:

I have gotten my moneys worth

Faults:

I have had electrical problems, I have went through several alternators and batteries.

I have had overheating problems, this is my third radiator and water pump.

I have went through three driver's seats.

General Comments:

I still have the original transmission and engine. I drove the first 85,000 miles in Germany, which is where I bought the car.

The car still runs fine on the expressway and still gets about 28 miles per gallon.

The car still handles well and accelerates quickly.

1985 Volkswagen Scirocco 1.8 8v

Summary:

Affordable, heaven on wheels...

Faults:

Nothing beyond what I consider basic maintenance - suspension, brakes, engine mounts, etc. When you've owned a car 10 out of 15 years, you see a lot of parts needing to be replaced. For anyone looking at buying a 15 year old car, be realistic and expect problems.

General Comments:

The Scirocco is simply a joy to own and drive. After 10 years, I still love my '85 as much, if not more than the day I bought it. I do the majority of my own maintenance. If I wasn't addicted to Sciroccos, and didn't modify every aspect of the car, it would have been a cheap car to own. Buy a Scirocco, I promise you'll love it!

I have loved owning my Scirocco (1986 GTX) since I bought it 10 years ago, it's fun, reliable and safe, a really good car.
