There is a reason they started making these water cooled.

Faults:

These vanagons are just plain too heavy for an air cooled engine. It weighs twice what the previous buses weighed, and uses the same engine... a 1980 Vanagon with only 40,00 miles... you figure it out...it's because they run consistently at 225 degrees, rather than the regular 180 degrees fahrenheit, and they are too heavy. The worst vehicle I ever owned!

Faults:

Burnt out one head at approximately 110,000 miles.

Upholstery wearing out.

Body rusting.

General Comments:

This car is an outstanding SUV. Carries up to 6 people, sleeps 4, can carry 14' lumber or a wash machine. Easy to work on, friends love it.

1981 Vanagon 2.0 Air Cooled Stock engine with (dead air recirculation) which is a pipe that attaches from exhaust just before the muffler, to the intake manifold above, is a factor to prevent detonation inside combustion chamber. Lowing head temperatures. just a tip...
