1988 Volvo 240 DL 4 cylinder

Summary:

The best car that I have owned!

Faults:

1. Clutch had to be replaced.

2. Air conditioner failed.

3. Radio speakers on the doors had to be replaced.

4. Shocks replaced.

5. Brake pads replaced.

6. Back of front seat frame broke-seat leans to the right. Replacement is not available.

7. Cruise control never worked correctly.

8. Fog lights malfunctioned soon after I bought the car.

General Comments:

1. Overall a very reliable automobile.

2. Car is slow on the acceleration; probably related to 4 cylinder engine.

3. Exceptional gas mileage; about 30 miles per gallon.

1988 Volvo 240 DL 2.3

Summary:

EXCELLENT car for $1000...bought another one when this one started leaking oil

Faults:

Started leaking oil at 180k.

General Comments:

Originally bought this vehicle as a temporary car, but wound up keeping it for 5 years.

Very reliable, and inexpensive to maintain and operate. (Have a really great INDEPENDENT VOLVO repair shop.)

GREAT gas mileage, easy to park and turn, and fun to drive. Really wish I had bought a 240 when they were new... but loved this one so much, that when it started leaking oil, I got on Craigslist and found another one. My new one is a '92 with an automatic, but the truth be told, I much prefer the manual transmission of my old, leaky 1988 model. I guess one can never have enough old 240's parked in the driveway...

Regarding oil leaks, not many people are aware that 240s have a flame trap and it gets clogged after a few thousand miles. If it is not replaced, it can cause pressure to mount, resulting in oil leaks.

1988 Volvo 240 GL 2.3 gas

Summary:

Brilliant to drive

Faults:

All the brakes needed to be fixed when I bought.

It needs a new clutch.

That's all that has been wrong with it and I've only fixed the brakes.

General Comments:

I love this car. It did me well for the time I owned it. I like driving a lot so quite naturally a Volvo suited me well. Comfortable to drive and absolutely brilliant handling when in the right hands. Did a couple a rallies with it and won. Great in the snow with the studs too.

I took it to the mountain lots and enjoyed every trip, and every corner taken a little more sideways. Unfortunately due to the work it needs I am selling it. I will definitely own one again in the future. They are awesome.

1988 Volvo 240 DL 2.3

Summary:

Cool as ice

Faults:

A leak occurred after a fender bender with the tow package of a truck during a snow storm. Car proved very safe, got away with a nick on the hood and a busted right turn signal. I was unscathed. Aluhumdulillah.

Nice car, especially for the year. Reliable. At least the one I have.

General Comments:

The car is made for taller and larger people, which I like. It has a very simple design which is nice and drives well. It's solid, and if you own one you know what I mean. With some new paint it looks decent and there's a lot that can be done to it to make it more appreciable. You may want to join Volvo's High Mile club where you'll get medals and promotions for driving it.

1988 Volvo 240 DL 2.3L

Summary:

A Volvo was a Volvo until Ford got involved

Faults:

I have had this 240 dl for about 7 months now, and until now (knock on wood) nothing has been replaced.

General Comments:

This is my second Volvo after having driven a 1979 244 DL station wagon with 429,000 kms on it. The only reason I got rid of the wagon was an overseas move, so I gave it to my sister who to this day drives it proudly with 600,000 kms (she hopes for a million for a free Volvo).I have spent the past years driving a Toyota, but always looking with envy at Volvo drivers. Recently the opportunity came up to purchase 1988 240 DL at a good price and I jumped at the chance. These cars are seriously the safest most trustworthy cars on the road today. If you have the chance to pick one up don't let naysayers scare you about Volvo quirks... the positives far far outweigh the negatives!!!
