1977 Volvo 244 DL 2.1

Summary:

Sturdy Swede That Outlasts Others

Faults:

A/c didn't work when purchased.

Wipers must be manually parked.

Windshield leaks onto passenger floorboard in rain (faulty gasket)

A/c blower motor started binding up at 170,000 miles.

Water pump started leaking at 175,000.

Front struts needed replacement at 174,000.

Exhaust developed rattle at 178,000.

General Comments:

This car was well cared for and looks and drives like a ten year old car.

Fuel economy has been consistant at 19mpg in city driving.

Very solid with no creaks or body/interior rattles.

Very very minimal rust; a small spot at the bottom of the spare tire well and another on the rocker panel inside the rear passenger side door.

This car is not terribly quick, but has adequate acceleration and handles like a sports car.

This has truly been a worry-free and impressive automobile.

Would you buy another car from this manufacturer? Yes

A Volvo 240 handles like a sports car???

(Disclaimer: I own a somewhat newer Volvo 200-series -- a 1990 4-door DL sedan.) Yes, I find my 240 to handle better than even most new cars. I have yet to do any modifications, like adding anti-sway bars.
