1983 Volvo 245 DL 4 cycinder 2 lit?

Summary:

Reliable car for the money

Faults:

I sold it because my 164 was almost done, and it started having some problems.

The power steering started going out.

Over-drive broke.

Speedo/Odo stopped.

Ball joints (I did replace those).

Needed new exhaust system (I did replace).

Radio no longer worked (put in another stock).

Front speakers blown (back speakers OK tho..)

General Comments:

Never broke down or left me stranded. I only bought it as a temporary car while my 164 was getting its new engine. The engine ran smooth, and didn't leak or burn oil.

I thought the seats were very comfortable, and I felt safe driving it.

People at school generally think it's uncool.

I was surprised how easy it was selling it. I had over 35 responses to buy it. It was no problem, I got exactly back what I paid for it. Minus the repairs I did to it. A lot of people were interested, although some just liked to waste my time, although the third person to look bought it. Nothing more annoying than getting the car ready to show, and they look the entire car over, test driving it for 15 minutes, and then say they didn't think their daughter would like it. Haha are you kidding me?! It's not meant to be a "Cool" car! Haha some people.

1983 Volvo 245 DL 2.4

Summary:

Rock n roll 4 banger!

Faults:

Lower ball joint's (at 400k, what would you expect!).

Water pump at 350k.

Engine wiring at 350k.

As far as wiring goes on early 80's Volvos, it's common for the insulation to crack open and fall apart.

Brand new wiring kits are pretty chea, and worth it!

You can put 500k on a Volvo and still not burn oil!

General Comments:

Other than the wiring defect that these car's are known for, I would recommend this car to anyone who is looking for cheap transportation, being that they run what seems like literally forever, and due to so many good part's cars in junkyard's, not a bad gig at all.

Oh, and the cargo space and all the leg room in the passenger area, and also knowing how these cars are built. I feel totally safe in any Volvo.

Overall great cars, with classic style, before classic style was cool!

The Volvo 200 series as well as 700 series had vast improvements after 1988. This includes upgrades to the problematic engine compartment wiring systems, as well as a much improved b230f motor, and a 4 speed AW 70 auto tranny. Also, the body of the 88 and later Volvo's are much more resistant to rust than the previous models.

IMHO, go with the newer RWD Volvo's, as these are the ones that gave Volvo the reputation of being durable and reliable.

Personally all the Volvo's that I have owned (prior to Ford buying them out) have they're quirks. For me Volvo's go through alternators, water pumps, brakes and have interesting electrical systems. Other than that they have never failed me. I have owned a 79 245 wagon, 70 144, 77 242, 78 244, 89 245, 88 745. Contrary to what the gent above me specified, the 740 gave me the most amount of trouble with the haphazard turbo that seemed like an after thought. However every 240 series I have owned never give me any serious trouble. The beauty is the motors are very, very simple and even a newbie can figure things out with ease. Very trouble free cars hence why I have owned 6 of them.

If they only still built cars like this, I would buy another one

Faults:

When I bought the car there were minor engine and transmision leaks. But other than that, the car was fine altogether.

General Comments:

I love the room that this car has to offer. Fold down the second seat and you can hold a small table and a few fold-a-way chairs nicely.

However the performance of this car is lacking and 0-20 MPH range. But once you get up to highway speeds it passes nicely and keeps up with traffic without struggling.

I have done all the normal maintnce work to this car my self. It's an easy car to understand and fix.

It has a classy, sophisticated look to it. It stands out from the other cars its around in the car park. I enjoy owning and driving this car. It's a wonderful car to drive on long drives. You don't feel tired after driving long.

I couldn't agree with you more, I have had my 245DL for 12 years-over 600,000 kms and it will not stop running well. Has been to Alaska 3 times, I do lots of oil changes, but other than regular maintenance like plugs/exhaust/brakes I have only to do carb work and rebuilt the over drive 10 years ago.

You and just about anyone who has owned a Volvo wagon would buy one again. I know I would. That was an extremely dependable car. I wish someone would build a boxy medium-sized car powered by ridiculously small tractor engines and transmissions again. They were good. I miss being able to fit everything I needed into the back, and I even miss wondering whether the weird Borg-Warner magnetic overdrive would kick in.
