1990 Volvo 760 Turbo Intercooler B230FT

Summary:

A safe, reliable, surprisingly fast bargain

Faults:

The tie-rods have needed replacement.

The drivers side window regulator had to be rebuilt.

The passenger seat electrical controls have needed repair.

The transmission down-shifter cable has needed alignment.

Front brake rotors had to be machined.

Fuel pump relay has needed replacement.

Air-conditioner condenser has a leak, and needs replacement.

General Comments:

This car is very nippy, very reliable, and fast - especially when one consider how heavy it is (3500 lb).

Being RWD, it has a small turning circle, and handling is excellent.

The interior is very luxurious, and comfortable.

Mileage is not good - about 18-20 mpg for city driving, and 20-22 for highway driving.

The car is very safe, and built very solidly. I rear-ended a 2000 Mercedes S500. Nothing happened to the Volvo, or me. Wish I could say the same for the Mercedes.

1990 Volvo 760 Turbo 2.3L turbo

Summary:

I can`t afford to drive anything else

Faults:

The rear brake pads needed to be changed.

The automatic transmission was slipping so I replaced it with a manual transmission (big difference in performance and economy).

Leak in the intercooler hoses causing rough running.

General Comments:

This car is fast, safe, comfortable and fun to drive. Changing to a manual transmission ($300.00 in used parts, 6 hours labour) has changed the car for the better. With the manual transmission I get 35 miles per gallon and 0-60 acceleration under 7 seconds, all in a comfortable and roomy wagon.

Parts are cheaper from the dealer than after-market, but labour is best left to the corner garage. This is a very easy car to work on.

1990 Volvo 760 Wagon turbo intercooler

Summary:

Excellent wagon, tough, comfortable, fast and versatile

Faults:

Turbo (ouch!), eats front disk brakes twice as fast as rear, vibration damper (lower pulley assembly), headliner fell apart (older models don't have this foam material above), front light assembly falling apart on both sides - lost lenses.

General Comments:

Luxurious with all extras, neat extra child seats in back, all electrics, sunroof and towing package. Way more car than I could afford new and had no problem buying it with good maint. records. Really hard not to use turbo but would not buy this model without it as it makes a huge difference in performance. Rear drive means very tight turning radius which I often appreciate compared to FWD models and better towing balance.
