1996 Volvo 850 turbo

Summary:

FAST, RELIABLE, Underrated

Faults:

Nothing so far... replaced a small slow oil leak before I purchased it.

General Comments:

FAST FAST FAST.I'm 20 yrs old and ppl don't realize how fast this car is until I fly past them on the highway. I made this car my own... forget the old timer car stereotypes... This car is Reliable, powerful, roomy, and comfortable... I love it... I bought it used wit good mileage for under 3 grand. I turned the turbo up on it so I'm ready for anything. I'm a college student so I need a reliable car that is going to get back and forth to school from NJ to PA. Would def recommend this car. Its safe... the system is unbelievable for a factory and it's a powerful machine when you need it to be. The tranny blew on my 1990 BMW 535. I recently bought this car with hopes in selling it when I graduate. Not too sure if I am willing to do that anymore...I'm beginning to like it more and more everyday.

1996 Volvo 850

Summary:

Mediocre

Faults:

Weird problem with the steering at about 50k miles.

Computer problems that made it fail smog about 100k miles.

Brake problems.

Fuel pump.

Antenna motor.

Several other things I can't remember.

General Comments:

Mediocre at best as far as reliability. Repairs are fairly expensive.

It's slow, but handles well. I like driving it, though it's nothing great.

Visibility isn't very good. The thick posts between the windows might help the car hold a truck on the roof, but they might keep you from seeing a truck on the road.

You still kept this awful car for 11 years now, and 160000 miles... is it as bad as all that???

1996 Volvo 850

Summary:

Would never buy a Volvo again, really

Faults:

The cruise control stopped working at 40,000 miles. The check engine light was on more often than not. The brakes constantly needed repairing. The little door to the gas cap would not open, so we had to move a panel in the back to pop a wire to open it every time we wanted to put in gas. At 106,000 miles, it died, even though we were vigilant about service and using premium gas. NEVER AGAIN.

General Comments:

A very expensive machine, totally unreliable.

So unreliable that you kept it for over 100,000 miles!

I wonder how it died??? Never heard of a Volvo dying so young...

This review sounds suspect. My 1996 850 SE has over 411,000 kms on it. Still on the original engine and transmission. Owned it for five years now, only replaced radiator/hoses, belts, A/C compressor, besides the usual wear and tear stuff like brakes, wiper blades etc. I've never heard of an 850 dying so young either, except if it's been totaled.

These motors are pretty much bulletproof, if well looked after.

1996 Volvo 850 Turbo Wagon 2.3L turbo 5 cylinder

Summary:

Excellent

Faults:

Mass Airflow Meter (Bad when I bought it in 2004; common fault around 135K)

Rear Main Oil Seal Leak (It was bad when I bought the car and is still bad, written up as leaking @ 125K)

ABS/TRACS Controller (easily and cheaply repaired)

Right Front Wheel Bearing.

General Comments:

Excellent vehicle--the fourth Volvo I've owned. Each of the repairs I've made on it are common wear n tear items for all 850s; plenty of data is available on the internet on how to fix those yourself.

Great driving wagon which should last another 155K.
