1999 Volvo C70 HT Turbo HT turbo

Summary:

Stay away from Volvo-Bad reliability

Faults:

Oil seals have been checked by 2 dealers. Although under warranty, each dealer charged me $100 to investigate what was going on (car made pinging noise when idling).

Seats rock back and forth when braking or accelerating.

Various warning lights come on and off at different times making you wonder, "Is my brake system failing (gasp) or is it just a lights thing?"

Power Seats and windows are so slow that people actually make fun of it when they get into my car.

Power windows rub-- Dealer has tried to fix it twice now (actuator motor went out once.. they still rub)

Oxygen Sensor went out at 45,000 miles. Dealer replaced under warranty (thank God, that was a $1500 service). There are two sensors (from what I was told). They both went bad.

Steering wheel makes rubbing noise when turning (more pronounced when cold outside).

General Comments:

I love the looks of this car and the fact that you don't see them around too often.

Also, the stereo is great, as are the seats.

However, the dismal reliability have completely soured me on Volvo as I promise myself to never buy one again (lease one for 3 years if you want one).

2003 Volvo C70 T5 Convertable turbo

Summary:

Worth every penny

Faults:

My power Steering had trouble because the Line was not properly attached in the factory. This caused "dry" turning. This problem was quickly rectified.

General Comments:

I was a little nervous spending 75K Canadian on this car as I was not sure it would be worth that much to me. I wanted to avoid the more flashy BMW and Mercedes. I am very happy I went with this choice, I swear by this car. It drives so smoothly and it's got power to burn. Second gear is like Mach 3.

The C70 is the most comfortable car I have ever been in. The seats are unbelievable.

There is very little turbo lag. Very tight turns.

Nicest looking car on the road.

The car is beautiful to look at. The coke bottle shape is so tasteful.

I thought my car was the most beautiful car on the road, now I find out a Volvo is!

1999 Volvo C70 Coupe HPT- T5

Summary:

Beautiful car with horrible reliability

Faults:

An o-ring in the oiling system went bad and resulted in a lack of oil getting to the upper engine.

Anti-lock brake module started malfunctioning after 50,000 miles. Dealer stated this is extremely common on most 96+ Volvo models. This results not only in non-optimal braking, but loss of speedometer function at least half the time while I'm driving.

Radiator needed replacement at 55,000 miles.

Electronic Throttle System started to malfunction at 60,000 miles. Dealer personnel have also stated this is a very common problem on 99-01 vehicles.

There are many leaks in seals where the frame-less windows meet the rubber trim of the body. This results in extremely loud wind noise at highway speeds, as well as flooding of interior during automatic car-washes. Dealer has not been able to remedy the problem.

Radio head unit has been replaced twice because of Cd's jamming inside of it. The third one still has same the same problem.

General Comments:

This is a great car if it weren't for numerous reliability concerns I've had.

Since it's a high-pressure turbocharged car, low end acceleration is dismal because of turbo-lag. But once the turbo is spooled up, car is amazingly quick for a front-wheel drive car.

Handling is also very good for a front-wheel drive luxury car.

Stereo is excellent as far as sound quality is concerned.

Seats are extremely comfortable.

Because of non-symmetrical 5 cylinder configuration, the car vibrates a lot.

Dealer service is extremely expensive.

5 cylinder engines are actually very smooth in operation, and due to their firing order are inherently smoother than 4 and 6 cylinder engines. If you were experiencing bad vibrations, it is likely due to some mechanical issue like worn out engine mounts.
