2004 Volvo S40 Base with Sports Package 1.9 litre turbo

Good entry-level luxury vehicle - very safe

2. Driver's power window streaks - Weather strip installed, covered by warranty

4. Front body kit damaged due to scrapes; vehicle is extremely low - Not covered by warranty. $26 replacement for center piece of body kit.

General Comments:

This car is the last year from the original style. I'd figure Volvo would have fixed all the issues on the last release of this vehicle. Apparently not. There are a lot of quirks on the car, which apparently is normal.

1. If you leave the keys in the accessory position for longer than 1-2 minutes, the car won't start if you turn the ignition. You have to turn the key to position OFF and ON again to restart. Something about being in Accessory mode draws a lot of ignition power.

2. On very hot days (100+), the climate control may switch off and on. I believe this is due to overheating.

3. Cruising at 20-30mph and releasing the accelerator causes the vehicle to down-shift, which lurches the car forward.

4. The car's driving and shifting style changes and adapts to how you drive it when you first start it up. (i.e. heavy acceleration after taking off from a cold start will result in shifting at higher RPMs, etc).

It's very easy to reset the service light without having to go to the dealership.

2004 Volvo S40 LSE A SR 1.9 turbo

Summary:

Good looks with a mean little engine

General Comments:

Excellent car. Good bang for the buck.

Good styling / looks, luxurious, good on gas and excellent performance.

Good horsepower (170) / torque (177) to weight (2,767 lbs.) ratio.

There is a slight turbo lag off the start, but when the turbo kicks in, that's it. And even at high speeds, it will keep going.

I am very satisfied. I can't wait to upgrade to a 200+ turbo model with a Geartronic transmission (like Tiptronic) in a few years.

2004 Volvo S40

Summary:

The Best Car ever made!

Faults:

Nothing.

General Comments:

I would just like the praise the Volvo s40 because it saved my life. I had a bad car wreck when I hit ice and I slammed head on into a house and if I had been driving anything else I wouldn't have made it! Thanks Volvo for making such a safe car!

2004 Volvo S40

Summary:

This car does not lived up to my expectations

Faults:

The car was hit in the rear. The repair cost is unbelievable in terms of time involved. Volvo does not manufacture the body parts and it has been two months since the body parts were ordered and still has not arrived. Effectively, this S40 model has a very expensive collision repair even for small dents by virtue of the reason given above, and caused a lot of hassle. I cannot recommend this car to anybody. Stay out of this car.

General Comments:

Volvo s40 does not have readily accessible parts and costly to repair.

Fair enough comment if you live in North America, probably all European cars are costly to repair compared to the domestic product. However, in Europe this is not a problem and I think you should say something about DRIVING the car to be more credible, all accidents are horrible and never cheap to fix.

One of the major factors why motorists choose to buy a Volvo is safety. Another motorist crashed your car, it would be useful to know how the car was after the during and after impact. If the crash was a lot worse, would you have preferred to be in the Volvo or something else? a Ford for example..

I agree, the original poster should comment on how the car drove, not its repair time. My 2000 528i was hit by a drunk driver and it was in the shop for seven weeks. Luckily, I got a loaner paid for by the other's car insurance. But I can't fault the car for this.

I agree with the original poster. We have a 2004 S40, which has been nothing but horrible trouble. While the drive is pretty good for an automatic transmission, it's not worth the money.

The car has never been in an accident. It has under 50,000 miles on it too. Yet the heating core, radiator, struts, rotors, have all broken. Also, we've never been notified of the 5 recalls posted for the model we have, and are currently experiencing a problem as a result. The car is now stalling out on us. Do not buy these cars, you'll throw away your money.
