2003 Volvo XC90 T6

Summary:

This car is too unreliable for me to recommend

Faults:

At 29000, I had the dealer replace the entire front end, due to faulty ball joints, tie rods, etc.

At 60000, my front end was replaced AGAIN.

At 75,000, my transmission started jerking every once in a while. Then, at 80,000, I got a SERVICE TRANSMISSION URGENT light. I took it to my mechanic and, $5,000 later, got a new transmission.

General Comments:

Comfortable and handles very well.

It is too unreliable.

Summary:

Buyer beware of the XC90

Faults:

Well, we just became members of the XC90 failed transmission club! The "urgent transmission service" required light came on. We were told by the dealership that we need to replace the transmission and front left axle. Our CPO warranty has expired. We called Volvo North America and expressed our expectation that Volvo pay for the repairs. They said they will contact the dealer and let us know something within 2 days. I'll post the outcome when we hear something. If we don't get a favorable outcome, we will contact the media and try to get this issue on the news. It is really unacceptable that there has not been a recall for this problem.

2003 Volvo XC90 T6

Summary:

Would not purchase another Volvo

Faults:

Expected to have this car for 200,000+ miles; however, at 110,000 I have major transmission costs. The transfer case (angle gear) went out and in general the transmission is slipping. I always had the dealer service the car and always agreed to all necessary work... how can this happen?

I'm so sick of going in for service and spending so much money. This car is just not worth the expense and hassle.

2003 Volvo XC90 T6

Summary:

Definitely NOT the Volvo I have known for life!

Faults:

Oh, where to start... bushings, bearings, struts, water ducts, turbo hose, transmission started going @ approx. 65,000 miles.

Car went out of warranty in March 09, THEN, they noticed transmission was slipping, told me to buy extended warranty. I said "no" due to the fact that this had been an issue prior to car going out of warranty. Called regional Volvo office in Rockleigh, NJ. Dealer then replaced transmission as a "good will" measure. Got car home, it now leaks transmission oil.

Has been back to dealer 3 times since (new pan gasket, etc.) They now say it is un-repairable, due to defective part in rebuilt transmission placed in car. They are calling Volvo hotline to see if another new transmission can be placed in car.

General Comments:

When this car is running properly, it handles beautifully. Took it to Canada for son's ice hockey tournament in ice & snow - handled like a dream. Then, transmission went 1 month later... :(

2003 Volvo XC90 T6

Summary:

Good except for transmission problem

Faults:

Transmission started slipping at 79,000 miles. Dealer couldn't find a problem. Now on vacation in another state, and the engine light and service transmission urgent light on.

Different dealer quoted $7,000 + to replace transmission - and national back order for part for 2-3 weeks! They act like this is an uncommon problem.

2003 Volvo XC90 T6

Summary:

Overpriced and under-reliable

Faults:

Most recently, the transmission went after a year plus of having the "check engine" light come on. A myriad of other problems have occurred. A typical visit to the dealer service department runs $500 to $1000, with at least one visit per year since I've owned the car.

Volvo corporate did pay for my transmission replacement when I called them, but the dealer did not help with the negotiation, and did not offer a loaner or help with a rental for the three weeks that I didn't have my car, because the transmission replacement was on backorder.

General Comments:

This car is unreliable, which makes it frustrating and expensive to own.

The style and comfort are beautiful, and the space for an SUV is "just right" -- not too big or too small. It drives really well and is flexible for all of my human and non-human transport needs.
