2019 Mitsubishi Outlander Instyle+ 2.4 PHEV

Summary:

Clear improvement on previous generation

Faults:

Nothing major over the over 6.5 years my wife has had this car, this was covered under warranty:

Poor connection in power window button, that was reattached.

Cleared out coolant filter for the heater.

Dealer changed one high voltage cable on their own initiative, was corroded by road salt and could have started a fire according to the auto tech.

One clamp on the exhaust system refitted, even this was my wife's fault for driving over a concrete runner that hit the exhaust system.

Out of pocket jobs:

New brake pads.

New brake discs due to rust and general wear.

Fixed myself:

Loose screw for the passenger handle.

Refitted a loose plastic lid on the seat base

General Comments:

Bought as a replacement for a 2.0 PHEV. This generation "2.5" is a much better car than the generation 2 version. The 2.4 engine has more power than the 2.0 and uses 15%-20% less fuel on longer trips, especially with load. The 2.0 simply is underpowered for such a heavy car. Regeneration and battery is better.

Better sound insulation, sound system and driver support systems. Interior looks better and a bit more upscale.

The 4wd system is decent on snow and ice. The car has heated front window and electric auxiliary heater, which is very nice in the winter.

2016 Mitsubishi Outlander Instyle+ 2.0 PHEV

Summary:

Does not quite deliver

Faults:

Nothing, however the paint quality is poor. Even though we paid extra for metallic paint, it scratched and chipped easily. Got a €1200 price reduction when we traded it in, since it needed a touch up several places.

General Comments:

Comfortable and spacious enough for us. Electric heated front window was nice in the winter.

This was a plug in hybrid. Good mileage when local driving, pretty thirsty on longer trips. The non-turbo 2.0 was somewhat under dimensioned for this heavy car when the battery was empty. Battery range not that good, 40 km in summer, maybe 25 km in the winter. The technology does not deliver low fuel consumption in the real world. However the trade in price was surprisingly good. A lot of people obviously love these second hand. The reason is probably that they are practical for families, and the build quality is good. Engine and transmission problems are virtually unheard of, I'm told.
