1969 Volkswagen Beetle 1300 Automat 1.3 petrol

Summary:

Slow and thirsty

Faults:

Rusty front wings and floor.

Temperamental petrol heater.

Hand brake cable rusted stuck.

Semi automatic transmission maintenance intensive, but never directly failed during ownership

General Comments:

My mothers commuter car. Slow and thirsty, but she really loved it. Rare semi automatic transmission. Had a petrol heater which was very practical in the winter. Not much wrong with this car, but in the end it had a lot of rust especially in the floor. Petrol use was pretty bad, new VW Polo that replaced it used about half the amount of petrol per distance.

1967 Volkswagen Beetle 1300 1.3 petrol

Summary:

Cockroach of the car family

Faults:

Badly rusted.

Gear linkage badly worn.

Heater channels rusty, so barely any heat in the front.

Heavy oil consumption and leaks.

Barely any brakes in the front, severely worn.

General Comments:

A rusty beater I used over the winter. Bought for scrap money and sold for scrap money.

I've never been a Beetle fan. Yes, these are incredible robust and simple, but as cars actually horrible. Slow, noisy and pretty bad on petrol considering the small size of the car. However, good in the snow at low speeds. Above 80 kmh, it felt unstable and dangerous to drive. Nightmare on longer trips.

Name fits, maybe they should call it the cockroach? Almost impossible to kill, but besides that not much else positive.
