1992 BMW 3 Series 316i E36 1.6 petrol

Summary:

Good car, but be careful when it's wet

Faults:

Differential problem.

Alternator.

General Comments:

When bought new in 1992, the design was fantastic, and after all these years it is still a good looking car.

Handling is good in the dry after lowering and fitting 225/50 R16 with original BMW wheels. Dangerous in the wet however, with a nervous back axle and probably the most twitchy car I ever owned.

Expensive dealer maintenance even for a simple oil change; stopped going there at 118k km and adopted the old BMW maintenance schedule.

Good reliability, except the BMW dealership stopped changing the diff oil and it went pop due to it.

1995 BMW 3 Series 316i Compact 1.6

Summary:

Very good car

Faults:

When I bought the car in 2001 with 81.000 km, it was quite new.

Until now, besides oil, filters, tires and lamps, the car had to change: alternator (2003 - 124.000 km), thermostat (199.500 km), front suspension arms (2009 - 210.000 km).

The car is still in quite good condition. The shift knob is in bad shape (since more or less 190.000 km), and so is the upper part of the steering wheel (since more or less 210.000 km).

General Comments:

It's not a fast car, but more than enough for normal users.

The fuel consumption is very good compared with other 1.6 and 1.4 petrol engines.

Overall, I am very satisfied with the car.

1996 BMW 3 Series E36 IS Coupé 1.9 petrol

Summary:

High quality sports car

Faults:

Fuel indicator.

General Comments:

Very comfortable to run, even with M-technics suspension.

Fuel consumption is quite impressive for a 1.9 petrol (about 10l/km).

Performance could be a bit better. Is slow compared to Hondas with smaller engines.

The car is reliable and driver's position is superb.

Handling is very nice, but you need to have your tires and suspension in good shape, otherwise it's a nightmare to drive it (RWD) in wet conditions. Don't let your wife drive it with the kids inside...

Plenty of room inside for a coupé.

Boot access is very restricted.

2001 BMW 3 Series 330d sw 3.0tdi

Summary:

Very interesting performance for a diesel

Faults:

None.

General Comments:

I have had lots of cars and I can tell you that for a diesel engine (would recommend ac scnitzer kit) it runs great. huge amount of power at lower revs and does not fade much as it goes beyond 3.000rpm as most small engine diesels. handling is more than honest brake capacity comfortable for top speed and superb gearbox.

1992 BMW 3 Series 316i 1.6

Summary:

A rare beauty, 9 year old car!

Faults:

Absolutely nothing, only a few problems with the electrical system, but nothing that a brand new fuse can't fix.

General Comments:

I bought the car because it is lovely and my wife likes it.

I have tuned the car because the max speed was poor. A few more horsepower and the problem was fixed.
