2004 Mitsubishi L200 4x4 Strakar Club Cab 2.5 TD (115 HP)

Summary:

The reason for a 10 year best-seller!

Faults:

The battery packed up after 14 months at 45,000km.

The gasket of the turbo developed a leak at 65,000km. New gasket and setup of the electronic control unit.

Started to heat up with A/C on, when on low revs and high temperature outside, over 35ÂșC. Thermo-ventilator replaced at 95,000km.

All repairs and changes made by the dealer, under warranty (3 years or 100,000km) at no costs.

General Comments:

This light truck was used on city driving, highway trips, country lanes, dirt tracks and no tracks at all. Nearly 100,000km in two and a half years, in rough conditions and still looks like new.

Oil change and chassis greased every 7,500km.

Filters changed every 15,000km.

Transmission fluid changed every 45,000Km.

New belts at 90,000km.

And that was it. Still the original shock absorbers, brake pads and tyres. And everything working fine.

Must mentioned the tyres, BFGoodrich All-Terrain AT LT265/70 R16, until now I would not believe a set of tyres could do 100,000km.

On the road it is a safe car and quite comfortable, if we keep in mind it weights over 2 tons.

Off the road it is an amazing car. Good ground clearance, good tyres, limited slip differential with the possibility to lock it completely make it embarrass many 4x4 despite the long wheelbase, with over 5,10m of total lenght.

The EasySelect transmission, the 5speed manual gearbox and the automatic front hubs all work smoothly.

Inside the cabin has two great front seats and two small ones on the rear. Leather driving wheel, radio CD with 4 speakers and a top AC auto climatiser made life easy indoors.

This version of the 4cylinder 2.5 TD has a variable geometry turbocharger and an electronic unit which made it more powerful, smooth and economic then its predecessors.

Even so, the 115HP drinks an average of 10 to 11 liters of diesel every 100km. This could go down to 9 if looking for economy or up to 13 on highway at 140/150 km/h.

Would you buy another car from this manufacturer? Yes

I have had my beastie for 3 years, and not only do I use it for work, I have bob tailed it and lifted it. Also I run a set of 265/75/16 extreme mud tyres with a 30mm offset. I regularly change the oil and filters, but mine is on a P reg. I think they had a good name then, but all I hear about the new ones is bad news. Maybe my money is better invested in a rebuild??
