2004 Jeep Liberty Limited 3.7

The engine vibrates too much and it makes a rattling sound similar to a diesel engine.

General Comments:

I owned a 2004 Jeep Liberty Limited, 2 x 4, 3.7L. I am very satisfied with this vehicle, but not with the service here in Puerto Rico.

The day after we purchased our Jeep, we noticed a clanking noise very similar to the sound of a diesel engine. The vehicle was taken in for service; the dealer replaced some bad timing chain tensors, the crankshaft bearings were replaced too, and so was the chain case cover gasket and an "o" ring.

The noise was gone for one day, but by the second day the noise returned and now the engine block shakes, black stuff drips from the muffler, white smoke puffs burst when you first start the engine, the engine itself sounds much louder than before, and it expels a very strong carbon monoxide odor like an old car!

I have taken the vehicle for all its maintenance services. My husband took the Jeep to a different dealer and they said that the noise I keep hearing is normal on the 2004 model. If it is normal, why does it come and go as it pleases?

The dealer scheduled an appointment with a Daimler-Chrysler representative. At the scheduled appointment, this person admitted to hear an irregular sound and scheduled our vehicle for service for the following week. The day of the appointment he claimed that we were imagining this noise and nothing is being done. I want to take the vehicle to a mechanic not affiliated to a dealer for a check up. Will this affect in any way the warranty? What could possibly be the problem with my Jeep?

Would you buy another car from this manufacturer? Yes

As for the white smoke, if you cut the Jeep on and off a lot of times with out really driving it, this will cause the engine to flood temporarily and cause white smoke to come out, also it will probably run rough for a few seconds until it gets its act together. As for the black stuff, I have noticed that comming out of my 2003 model lately. At first I thought it was oil, but I put my finger in it and smelled it and it does not have an odor. My guess it just some dirt got up there and it's comming out with the water. It wasn't pouring out, it would drip a little bit say while the car was warming up or I let it run for a minute or two while in the house getting something.
