1990 Renault 4 GTL 1.1 petrol

Summary:

You must own R4 to like it

Faults:

I had problems with brakes. I changed everything and they still blocked. One day problem simply disapeared.

You can't repair the carburetor. It must be replaced.

Overheated the car once. Repaired head.

General Comments:

Strange look.

Very easy to drive.

Unorthodox transmission, but accurate.

Almost equal to 4x4 on rough terrain, or snow.

XL trunk.

5-6 lit/km.

Very reliable.

1991 Renault 4 GTL 1.1

Summary:

Great car best buy for the money

Faults:

Nothing has gone wrong yet, but I need to have some thing checked.

When it rains sometimes the car won't start.

Previous owner replaced the floor water pump with electric one - which does not work.

General Comments:

Great car for me. Small for city driving and parking, and yet big enough for 4 even 5 people to go on a small trip (200-300km, or even more). Great trunk, really big for a car this size. Engine is good, but when loaded with 4 people going uphill you can feel it's a bit week. Transmission works perfect, you get used to it easy and its very precise. It handles great on and off road, with high clearance it can go almost anywhere. Mine was repainted a few years ago and its not rusty, just a few spots which is great for a car old like this one.

1988 Renault 4 gtl 1.1 petrol

Summary:

Defeat the time

Faults:

Previous owner rebuilt the engine.

Oil pan was leaking when I bought it.

Voltage regulator needed to be replaced.

One of the screws holding intake manifold to the head was overtightened.

One of the cooling pipes leaked on the connection to the radiator.

Rear window heaters are ruined.

All the locks are out of order.

Some fuses loose contact from time to time.

Fuel tank was leaking.

The only real problem is rust. The car is disintegrating daily. The rear part of the chassis rusted away, and I'm waiting for the day when it will finally fall apart. I guess I got what I paid for...

General Comments:

Apart from rust problem, this car is amazing.

Everything is upside down. Engine is positioned along the center line, but it is a front wheel drive, gearbox is in front of it, screwed to the front of the car, there is a button on the floor for windshield washing pump, floor is flat, gearshift lever in the panel, it has Teflon wheel bearings, windows sliding to open, it has a chassis and body is just screwed to it, I find something odd about it everyday.

For the time when it was designed, I guess it has been a cutting-edge miracle on wheels..

Especially rear suspension, the same type has been used also for Dassau Mirage F1 combat airplane landing gear..

The car is ultralight, it is quick, handles great in corners once you get used to its weird behavior, good fuel economy, lots of room for everything, flat floor is great, Renault 4 is simple, easy to repair and it is fun to drive.

It will run on three wheels with one cylinder working. (not literally)

Engine sounds sweet, silent and accurate.

I looked at these cars with sheer disgust, untill I bought this one. It was the only logical choice for the money I had.

Rust is a big problem. If you don't know where to look, don't go buying one on your own or you will regret it. Chassis and body restauration costs more than one of these cars!
