1998 Hyundai Accent 1.5L Auto 1.5 petrol

Summary:

Basic transport, for undemanding drivers only

Faults:

Handbrake rusted and stuck soon after car was purchased.

Shock absorbers went at 2-3 yrs.

Exterior door handles kept breaking off - 3 sides in all.

Waterpump went at 3 yrs (40000+km)

Brakes worn off after 3 yrs

Transmission impossible to get kickdown even if floor accelerator. Have to use overdrive off button. Very leisurely driving required.

Aircon lost effectiveness after 2-3 yrs.

Transmission selector got confused - car thought it was in D and refused to start.

Dashboard lights intermittent and finally went off at 4 yrs.

General Comments:

Car was cheap to buy, but not to run. Poor quality fittings and mechanicals don't last. Awful clown like upholstery design.

Reasonably roomy, seats flat, but not too bad for long drives. Economy very average only, poor acceleration even though car is light.

Scrapped before it reached 5 yrs old.

1998 Hyundai Accent GL 1.3

Summary:

A good first car and recommended for young couples/families

Faults:

Hissing sound from engine even when idle.

General Comments:

The experience is based on a 100km trip in a rental car:

A quantum leap from predecessor, Excel! Good handling, easy steering and gear shift. Performance average but if you want to use it for work and play, it'll suffice. Pick up is good when pushed.

Recommended for young families (5 persons comfortably) or mature families (4 adults comfortably).

Only drawback is fuel consumption, very high for a 1.3l car
