1997 Volkswagen Caravelle 2.6i

Summary:

A very useful camper van

Faults:

The front brakes have had to be replaced.

All the belts on the engine were replaced, as the vehicle stood in the previous owner's garage for 2 years.

Radio no longer worked, and has been replaced with a new unit.

Small oil leak from engine was cured by changing the oil and fitting a new oil filter. There have been no more oil leaks since then.

Other than that, the car starts every time, and is able to pull any load.

General Comments:

The car is quick for a van, as it has an Audi 5 cylinder 2.6 engine (100KW) fitted from the factory.

It has very comfortable cloth seats all round, and easily fits 12 adults.

Very high ground clearance ensures some off road capability, even though this car is rear wheel drive.

The engine bay is somewhat cramped, and makes servicing a little painful on the hands, as it is located at the back of the car.

The car has average fuel consumption (10L/100km) on long trips, but for the amount of people and luggage it can take, I think it is a fair balance.

Would you buy another car from this manufacturer? Yes

How much does it cost? I am in Cape Town. I've seen the same model with low mileage.
