1988 Fiat Tipo DGT 1.6

Summary:

I love the Tipo, always did, always will

Faults:

Usual wear problems, i.e. temperature sensors, brake pads, exhaust.

General Comments:

The Tipo was definitely the best car of this class available in the late 80s, well built, reasonably quick, very spacious, personal design both inside and outside, and just different from the rest.

When I think its main rivals were the VW Golf and the R19, and that most people preferred both of them to the Tipo, I realise that we are heading towards plain and boring uniformity.

1991 Fiat Tipo DGT 1.6

Summary:

Load of crap

Faults:

New gasket, oil leaks everywhere, new exhaust, heater doesn't work, thermostat sticking, digital dashboard only works sometimes.

General Comments:

It's not a bad car, but very thirsty on gas.

1989 Fiat Tipo Basic Model 1.4 (72hp carb.)

Faults:

In the last year I had it, it started to have electric problems, but apart from that and a couple of minor oil leaks in the valve cover, reliability was excellent.

General Comments:

Fantastic car with lots of room, great handling, except for excess understeering in really hard cornering, honest if not exciting performance and sensible fuel consumption.
