1999 Audi A4 1.9 TDi

Summary:

Bulletproof diesel engine

Faults:

Just the usual wear and tear.

Replaced a control arm and a tie rod.

Heater stopped working; not a major issue in Sri Lanka.

General Comments:

This is the most reliable car I have come across. For its age it holds up really well. I have gone on journeys with a distance of 800-1200 KM and the car was rock solid. Pulls very well on hills, passing all the cars with a grin on my face.

The only place this car scores low is on its handling. Otherwise it's a very pleasant cruiser. Gets excellent gas mileage. On long journeys it does more than 17 KMPL.

2002 Audi A4 2.0L

Summary:

Lovely drive, lousy agents

Faults:

The day I bought the car, the radiator blew. I had repairs that amounted to 3000 USD; gasket, water pump, radiator, timing belt, and the list goes on.

Once it was fixed after over a month in the shop, it ran beautifully, albeit for a very short time.

The ABS / ESP light came on, and now I have to replace the ABS pump. Also the front suspension has given way, mainly because of the mileage and the low quality of roads here.

General Comments:

My main concern is the dealers. They are so ridiculously expensive, they know sweet little of the car or the faults that get shown in the scan. The original parts parts can be brought down to Sri Lanka for less than half the cost of the dealer.

It is sad that the agents are bringing down the value of the car. I still want to drive an Audi, because once you drive an Audi, you cannot go back to Japanese.

But Audi need to seriously look at its dealers, and make them more user friendly.
