2002 Renault Scenic Sport 2.0 16v

Summary:

Very nice car with annoying quality flaws

Faults:

Brakes have tendency to get stuck. Very common problem with this car apparently.

Driver side electrical window failed. Turned out to be a very common problem, so finding used parts was impossible and new replacement part is very expensive.

Trunk handle fell off. Turned out to be yet another standard problem with this car. The handle is held in place solely by a small o-ring. Just replace that and push the handle back in. If you've lost the handle, you probably won't be able to find a used part and will need to replace the entire lock.

ANOTHER very common problem with this car is that the TDC sensor gets dirty and makes the car difficult to start.

General Comments:

Very nice car, with good performance, well designed interior, lots of storage space - and some really annoying minor design flaws.

Handles decently despite too soft suspension.

Service is expensive and repairs generally difficult to do yourself. Finding used parts is difficult here in Sweden, especially as pretty much all owners will experience these same issues (handle, window, brakes, TDC sensor) and require the same spares.

2002 Renault Scenic

Summary:

Very good if it was not for the engine troubles

Faults:

In one year, we have had problems with ignition spools on three cylinders, not covered by warranty and expensive to replace.

General Comments:

This is otherwise an all round useful family car.

2003 Renault Scenic Authentique 1.6 16v

Summary:

Nice concept, but shocking quality!

Faults:

Squealing brakes (changed twice)

The dreaded ignition coil problem started to occur at 50000 km, i.e. the car runs on 3 cylinders and has the sound and performance of a Russian tractor. All 4 coils had eventually to be changed.

The radio goes on and off randomly in particular on bumpy roads. New radio and wiring had to be installed.

After two months the windscreen washer clogged up by gunk left by the factory (as stated by the authorized Renault mechanic)

Started the get generally swampy and handling deteriorated after 50000 km.

The central locking system unlocks the car at will. Very annoying to find the car unlocked although you are POSITIVE it was locked when you left it!

Interior is rattling and trim is falling off.

Steering joints had to be changed at 45000 km (I was not abusing the car!)

Dashboard goes out and then comes back without notice. Very scary to loose all meters!

General Comments:

The interior is roomy and pleasant, kids love the view through the big windows.

Fairly economical with good fuel mileage.

Myriads of smaller and bigger problems. At any time, we always had a couple of nagging issues to fix with the car. Not cheap in the long run and VERY annoying to have car in the garage regurarly. In addition the dealer and garage has been very unhelpful and not willing to take responisbility for the problems

We got rid of the car after 3 years and bought a VW Touran. There is absolutely no comparison - will never go back to Renault!

1998 Renault Scenic RN 1.6e

Faults:

The major problems are the remote controls and immobilizer; the control needed reprogramming, and I had to fetch the working remote to be able to start the car. I had to rent a car and drive 200km to get it.

The rocker cover has been replaced twice.

General Comments:

This is the perfect family car.

1998 Renault Scenic RT 2.0 petrol

Faults:

Front fog light and heated drivers seat, loose wires. Fixed quickly by dealer.

Water in rear spoiler brake light. Dealer scratched spoiler paint during repair. DUUUH! Touch up paint on spoiler required.

Change both gas struts for tailgate, they don't hold it up any more.

General Comments:

A good looking and VERY practical car.

Superb around town, a piece of cake to park. Brilliant for trips to IKEA. Take out the middle rear seat, bolt a fork holder and a front wheel holder to the floor and you can transport a bicycle inside the car.

All the extra storage space means I don't have to have a mass of tools, umbrellas, washer fluid etc, filling up the boot.

Kids love it and have ordered me never to buy anything other than a Scenic.

The CD player's remote control is superb.

Twin sun roofs are great but cause a little bit more wind noise.

Fuel consumption is 0.87L per 100km around town.

0.73 L per 100km on long runs.

Improvements?

3" longer front seat cushions.

Washer jets on the wiper arms so that the water jet actually hits the windscreen at speeds over 60kmh.

Less wind noise.
