1979 Volkswagen Type II Westfalia Campmobile 2.0 petrol
Summary:
Loving memories. Our family's loyal friend
Faults:
Rust is the main enemy, commonly appearing on lower panels, floors, and structural areas.
The air-cooled engine, although robust, can overheat if not properly maintained or when going uphill. While this problem was more common in Kombi models with smaller engines, this 2.0 version also suffered from wear and tear. Fortunately, it rarely gets very hot here, but it's something to be mindful of with this type of vehicle.
Wear and tear on suspension and steering components, which can result in unstable or noisy handling.
The suspension had to be completely replaced; luckily, spare parts were readily available at low prices. It's a car that, fortunately, is inexpensive and easy to repair.
Problems with the transmission shifting, such as gears sticking or not engaging properly, often requiring calibration or gear repair. However, the transmission itself was never affected, and I didn't replace it.
General Comments:
The Type 2 VW Bus, besides being an icon, is a vehicle that everyone loves, especially children. During the time we had it, I can say that we enjoyed it a lot as a family, especially on summer trips to the countryside and the beach. We used it quite a bit, even though it was the second vehicle in the house.
I bought the van when it was just over 5 years old with low mileage, it already came converted from the factory, with all the components of a camper, small kitchen, seats and bed, obviously being small there was no room for a bathroom, but I can say that for those years it was a pretty complete van.
As for handling, the suspension is a bit firm, which is to be expected given that its platform is based on the old Beetle. Even so, it's not at all difficult to drive; on the contrary, once you get used to it, driving becomes easy and fun. Driving one is an unforgettable pleasure for anyone who has had the delightful experience.
I didn't find it a slow vehicle. It's true that the 2.0 engine was the largest available, but given the van's characteristics, the engine moved its body quite well. Being a camper van also, it's heavier than a standard Kombi bus or panel van.
The fuel consumption, however, was quite high. It doesn't help that the engine is of a very old design and air-cooled, which causes fuel consumption to skyrocket, especially at certain speeds.
The most important thing to highlight is that, throughout all the years we had it, it brought us enormous satisfaction and joy. It's a fun, enjoyable van with simple yet extremely reliable German mechanics, easy to fix and very cheap to maintain, except for fuel.
It has undoubtedly earned its reputation as a truly lovable vehicle.
