1973 Peugeot 504 GL 1.9

Summary:

Rock hard

Faults:

I don't know the entire service history of the car. For the last 5 years I have been driving it (formerly my dad drove it).

It had problems with the starter. The starter was changed.

The brake hydraulic leaked for a long time and I was refilling it. Then I got it fixed.

The body rusts. This is the main problem.

General Comments:

I have a sentimental bond to this car. I have been riding in it since I was born. Although we thought about selling it, we never could take this hard decision.

It is a very though car, very comfortable suspension. Full with surprises. When people see how it goes or when they see the rear disc brakes, they are surprised.

The engine still doesn't need rectifying. It does not burn oil or anything.

I guess even if I sell this car, I will try to own another one in the future. I really felt sorry when I saw a photo on the net of several 504's lying in a scrap-yard in the US. I love this car.

Would you buy another car from this manufacturer? Yes

My dad owned a 1973 504 GL which he gave away to the family mechanic in 2003. That's 30 years from brand new and survivor of my brother's, sister's and my adventures and misadventures from the mid 80's. They are well built easy to fix due to their practical design. Though slow and crotchety like old Lions in terms of todays motoring standards these are great cars with an unbelievable smooth ride, roomy cabin and passenger comfort. Can surprisingly outlive several generations of owners if well maintained.
