1997 Audi A4 Base Model 1.8

Summary:

Buy one, you haven't lived till you've owned one!

Faults:

Nil, nothing,

General Comments:

This is a fantastic car! Gets me from Plymouth to Glasgow every weekend and returns 35 MPG!

Comfortable, and so solidly built, I think I'll be finished before the car is!

The only fault I have with it, is that one of the dash lights has gone and I don't know if I have to remove all the dash to fix it, any ideas?

Handles great, rust? nope, Audi's can't rust!

Looks fantastic, recommended to anyone!

You will need to get the Dash pod out (that's what Audi calls it) and change the bulb on the board. Bulb will cost you £2.00, but if you can't manager it, and it is a very tricky job, removing the Dash and fittings, Audi can do it for you, but they will want £169.00 for doing it. Remember the Bulb costs £2.00, bring your own and they might give you a discount.

1997 Audi A4 1.6v petrol

Summary:

Comfortable and good looking, but will cost and frustrate you

Faults:

Accelerator pedal broke off.

All 8 front wheel arms needed replacing at £100 each plus labor.

Engine inexplicably pinks (revs Bouncing between 1k and 1.5k) but generally only in Winter. This problem has been ongoing for 3 years.

Revs also occasionally disappear altogether so the engine cuts out even when warm.

Internal heating has failed and defied all repair attempts (3 at €700 each)..

Burns oil very quickly . Refill every two months or so.

Remote control is weak and cannot be trusted to lock the car. Means you have to wait to check it before walking away.

General Comments:

This is a great car to drive and very comfortable for the Driver. It is very fuel efficient and has aged well in that it still looks like a modern car after 8 years. It has never actually failed to start and is reliable and solid on the road.

On the other hand, there is zero room in the back for adults. every time someone gets in behind my seat I have to move the chair forward which is very uncomfortable for long drives.

While it has never broken down the inexplicable and apparently unrepairable problems I am experiencing are a huge inconvenience. I have just gone through my second winter with no heating in the cabin despite spending €2000 on repairs. Each time, I am charged, told there is a slight improvement and no change whatsoever has been made. The pinking in winter is equally baffling. No one can tell me why its happening and €1000 services only delay it for a few weeks if at all. Its intermittent and never happens near a garage.

1997 Audi A4 1.8 petrol

Summary:

I'll never ever buy an Audi again

Faults:

Nothing has actually gone wrong in the 3 months I have had this car.

General Comments:

A few problems:

The driver's seat is agony. I am 6'0" and 155 lbs, and I find the seat crippling after 45 minutes. I have no back problem - though the Audi might well be creating one.

There are several large blind spots.

The turning circle is very poor. This can cause problems for u-turns, tight turns and even parking.

The automatic gear box sounds as if it is in the wrong gear most of the time, and engine revs are high.

If the bonnet is opened when it is wet water cascades into the engine compartment.

There is no warning light for a low windscreen washer bottle. The bottle is small and needs refilling often.

The car drinks petrol.

Braking distance is long - I've had a garage check it and am told that the brakes are in A1 condition.

I'm selling tomorrow after three months, and accepting the substantial financial costs.

1997 Audi A4 Avant Quattro 1.9 TDi (110)

Summary:

Great looker. Maintenance nightmare

Faults:

Front suspension ball joints and bushes repeatedly failing. Main suspension arm actually snapped. I have since replaced almost all the components, at considerable cost.

Catalytic converter disintegrated and blocked the exhaust pipe, rendering the car useless. A replacement was only available from Audi and hence, very expensive.

Four wheel alignment was all wrong and I shredded £400 pounds worth of tires in only 1200 miles.

Rear windscreen washer sheared off at the base inside resulting in the hatch filling with washer fluid.

Engine and exhaust currently shakes badly due to one, or more, soft engine mounts.

General Comments:

This car is stunning to look at with it's lower Quattro suspension and dark pearlescent paintwork.

Interior build quality is superb and is virtually indestructible.

Quattro four wheel drive gives reassuring road holding in all weather conditions.

Subaru cars (you're probably from Australia -- the only country where it's not sold as a Legacy) appear to be reliable when maintained correctly from the onset. In NZ, seecond-hand Subarus from Japan are known to be trouble, and very expensive at that! Of course they could be ill-treated, but Jap used-car Toyotas and Nissans, despite possible neglect, are nowhere near as notorious or expensive to fix as a Legacy.

Who said that Mercedes is reliable? You just need to do some homework to find that Mercedes is certainly not more reliable than Audi. I have done 80,000km with my A4 without any problem except a broken gear cable. It is a bad design (plastic connection rather than steel, faulty design). I could not find replacement in Malaysia. I had to order it from abroad. I have a 5 series BMW. It is much better than Audi. BMW and, of course, Japanese cars are more reliable.
