2003 Audi A4 1.8T 1.8 turbo 20v petrol

Summary:

Solid and reliable, but very dull to drive

Faults:

Impressive reliability - has needed servicing and tyres only.

General Comments:

It's a beautifully engineered car which feels the same at 62,000 miles as it did at 2,500. Typical Audi reliability too.

No fun at all to drive. EVO magazine once described the VAG 1.8T 20v engine as "the most charisma-free internal combustion engine ever designed", and they're right. It's torquey thanks to the turbo, but the delivery is linear and uninteresting in a way that the exotic 5-valve, turbocharged spec doesn't even hint at. Can be made to guzzle fuel (as little as 22 mpg) without trying too hard as well.

This is one type of car where you wouldn't be missing out on anything by going for the diesel version. Handling is like the engine - competent and inoffensive, but it doesn't exactly encourage or reward exploration of its upper limits. For pounding motorways, and for making easy progress, both of which this car excels at, one of VAG's excellent TDI engines would be punchier where it counts, far more effortless and significantly more economical.

On the whole, the A4 does exactly what you would expect a premium saloon to do, in that it gets you from A to B in a comfortable and refined way, and with better build quality than the mainstream manufacturers (although do not disregard the strides they have made recently). It's not a better car than the 3-series, but on the plus side, it enjoys a far better image, not to be underestimated when it comes to other drivers letting you out of junctions or generally behaving courteously.

What it doesn't do is tug at the heart strings though, or invoke any emotion in the driver apart from respect. How much of an enthusiast you are dictates how much of a problem this will be for you.

With your mileage, I would be preparing myself to change the timing belt. Careful with that.

Best wishes.

2003 Audi A4 Sport 1.8T (190) petrol

Summary:

Fast family car

Faults:

In the first 12 months of ownership, nothing has gone wrong with this car. This is my first time I have owned a car that did not require any dealer assistance. Very pleased and surprised.

General Comments:

A fast family car with average fuel consumption (28 mpg). Very well designed car with exceptional build quality.

Only issue is that the suspension cannot handle bumpy / poor road surfaces at speed. As I paid extra for sports suspension, this is not acceptable.

The lack of standard equipment and the ever increasing price of Audi options on new cars is unacceptable, and will probably end my Audi ownership when I renew this car.

Service costs are also expensive.

One thing that you might try is changing the suspension to a stock non-sport or a more luxurious after market suspension. The fact that the bumps and poor road condition are getting you a little shook-up, is because you have the Sport suspension. Sport suspension is meant to be more firm and rigid, so you can bank and break corners at higher speeds with the car being a lot more stable. I would suggest TEIN suspensions for the right ride height, sport handling, and soft impact you are looking for.

My 4 year 80k warranty has finished and would you guess.

Does anyboday have experience or cost estimates to correct.

1. regular maintenance check at 90,000 km.

2. the sun roof - when I push up the roof it automatically drops back down.

3. any major repairs you came across that I need to aware off.

If you can indicate the year of vehicle and the km at time of occurence.

2003 Audi A4 Cabriolet 2.4 sport

Summary:

The coolest cabriolet in its class.

Faults:

The Servicing is going to be expensive.

The Insurance is high.

General Comments:

In my view the new A4 cabriolet is the the most stylish in its class.

The performance is just what I wanted. It's a dream to drive and when you need that extreme power surge for over-taking, you just ask and it's right there like your shadow.

Motorway cruising is effortless and comfortable.

The car has real presence and, when parked against other competitors, the Audi's full glory shines and puts the other cabriolets to shame.

The interior is very well built and luxurious, the smell of leather and the quiet purr of the v6 engine; you sometimes forget just how fast you're driving oops.

Yes I agree the A4 Cabriolet looks great, has good build quality and a great image. The only problem is that in terms of road holding, handling and driving position the BMW 3 series convertible is superior.

You've obviously never driven an Audi Cabriolet with sports pack then!

Sports seats - the most comfortable car seats I've ever sat in, way better and more adjustable than BMW 3 Series seats.

Sports suspension - Transforms the car, perfect blend of supple ride yet excellent body control.

17 inch wheels - Look superb.

All for an additional £750, essential on the Audi Cabrio.

The BMW probably does "handle" better, but since the Audi is superior in looks, interior quality, price, image, cabin space, hood design and style I think we can afford to give the Beemer its one hollow plus point!

I'll stick with my otherwise way superior Audi Cabriolet Sport though I think ;-D.

I had a 2.4 Diesel Automatic Cabriolet and had problems with the clutch. Eventually had total clutch upgrade under warranty.. a friend also had one and his clutch failed twice!

Looks fantastic and loved the multitronic gearbox. Not good on economy at high 20's mpg. (In comparison I had a E320TDi that did over 40mpg on the motorway!)
