1991 Citroen AX GT 1.4

Summary:

High power in an empty crisp bag. Brilliant

Faults:

The original engine wasn't looked after and it gave up after two week. I got a 30,000 bottom end and now it's fine.

The bushes were terrible, so were the shocks.

The dash is broken on the passenger side (it's a mk1 and they have terrible dashes) and it does rattle quite a bit.

The brake servo also went.

As did two head gaskets (the head was warped).

General Comments:

It starts every morning - although it needs a bit of nursing till it's up at running temperature.

But it's so much fun and the handling is so good that it's worth it.

I have quite a few mods - K&N, Janspeed manifold, Full SS system, ported, polished and skimmed head etc, Spax suspension kit, Powerflex bushes, Tarox discs and Mintex pads. She's a brilliant car - great fun.

It's the perfect starting point for someone who likes cars, it's forgiving and easy to work on.

It's a bit flimsy (I have a full roll cage on the way - for safety), so you need good suspension, and maybe a strut brace to get the most from her or she'll understeer like crazy.

1991 Citroen AX GT 500 1.4

Summary:

A super little car, but if you're going to get one, find a good one!

Faults:

Exhaust manifold had corroded through.

I had an oil leak on the sump of the engine.

The driver side rear lights stopped working.

General Comments:

This car is a very quick little thing, I kept up with a Ford RS2000 down some country lanes all the way up to 90mph.

Lots of room for ICE to go in.

Excellent if you like to see peoples jaws drop when they see you can keep up with them!

Very easy to tune.

1991 Citroen AX GT 1.4 carb

Summary:

Good ones are getting rare

Faults:

Wheels corroded.

Rear boot lock broken.

General Comments:

Very impressed - fast, reliable and different from the Nova's and Fiesta's.

A bit of a bone shaker, but bags of run. GET AN INDUCTION KIT.

1991 Citroen AX GT 1.4 petrol

Summary:

A car with unmatched handling and acceleration

Faults:

Nothing major has gone wrong with the car so far (touch wood).

The long range driving lights are not water proof, and allow water to build up inside the lens. This unfortunately means a lot of condensation and corrosion within the light itself.

All four alloy wheels were badly corroded when I first bought the car, and will undoubtably corrode again in time. However, when polished and re-laquered, you'll be hard pushed to find a better looked set of alloys.

General Comments:

This is possibly the most fun on four wheels, that the average person could purchase...

Even fully loaded, you can throw the car into corners and be fully confident of coming out still on all four wheels.

The acceleration is outstanding, matching and beating most other roads cars in the same bracket (XR3i etc).

1991 Citroen AX TGE 1.1

Summary:

Wallet friendly thrills

Faults:

A bit heavy on the choke.

General Comments:

No faults yet, don't listen to these other moaning losers, the car is cheap, reliable, fun.

With the sports trim, alloys, and in metallic grey - a totally cool pimp wagon (for £925).

1991 Citroen AX Memphis 1.1

Summary:

Fast

Faults:

Two front end prangs.

One shunt up the rear.

Broken into smashed glass.

Gear box (swapped for an AX sport one).

Usual wear and tear exhuast tires etc.

Clutch.

Suspension arm.

General Comments:

I cannot believe a 1124 AX like mine can pull 0-60 in around 8 seconds and does around 110MPH tops!!!

Now that's performance for a 1.1! - apart from the crashes (looks imaculate now bar one dent).

A good runner, only grout is its handling, they have a tendency to lean and as such leave the road.

But its performance gave me a run for my money!

The interior is nice with colour coded seats, but this only comes with the limited edition with colour coded dash - I dread to think how fast the GT version is.

I had a 1.1i AX, and can't agree with your performance figures, unless you were driving down a steep hill. 0-60 was 10.5 seconds and 105 mph tops (which is still very good for 1124cc's).

My ass can a 1.1 AX do 0-60 in 8 seconds. I would seriously think about getting your speedometer checked out. A normal 1.1 AX will do 0-60 in about 13 seconds and that is pushing it hard.

I kind of believe that it was nearly that quick cos my mate has got a jive and he got 0-60 in 11 and that's only a 1litre! It also VERY MUCH depends on how good the driver is! but I still think 8 is a bit quick, I think it would be more like around 9secs! but that is still quick!

Sorry mate, but I don't think so! I've got a modded ax gt on a H plate, and that does 0-60 in bout 7.9 seconds, so I doubt ur 1.1 would have a chance of breaking the 9second mark!

I have an AX Memphis and I'm afraid I have to AGREE with this guys figures. 0-60 in 8! No Problem. All you people with GT's will find that if you check with the manufacturer Memphis accelerates faster.
