2004 Citroen Berlingo Multispace Forte 1.9 diesel

Summary:

Great value for money

General Comments:

This car has been a pleasure to own, and at the price is unbeatable value. If you are not concerned about looks it is an excellent family car.

The fuel economy is excellent, it drives well, handles well and with the rear sliding doors, is great for putting the kids in the child seats. With the rear seats folded down, you have all the space you could wish for. The cabin has plenty of space and headroom for 5 adults.

The 1.9 Diesel engine pulls well, it will never set the world alight for acceleration, but this car is built for comfort not speed. In conclusion I have had the car for 1 year and it has been a pleasure.

I wanted one of these - until I drove one. It seemed like an ideal car, bags of space for young kids and all the paraphernalia. It has comfy seats, but that 1.9 non-turbo diesel engine is a bag of crap. Seriously lacks grunt on hills, and flat out at about 88 if you can be bothered to wait. If you have a carful of people, you need to thrash it, which destroys the economy. I'd advise people to go for the HDi one.

Peugeot's 1.9 XUD unit is the best diesel engine ever made. While it lacks the power and economy of the HDI engines, it is far more robust and is capable of very high mileage with little fuss.

No turbo and no common rail injectors or silly DPF to go wrong.

To call it a bag of crap is just wrong.

OK it is slow on heavy modern cars. But it's tough as old boots. My old 405 disintegrated around its XUD as it went beyond 333,000 miles.

Summary:

Excellent for the price - a real bargain

Faults:

Car was ordered with air conditioning, but when it was delivered the air conditioning was fitted, but they had forgotten to fit the switch to activate it!

Broke down with an air leak in the fuel supply after 35 miles. Had to be returned to the dealer who promptly sorted the problem.

General Comments:

Very comfortable to drive, very frugal, and has great load space. The downside is that the trim comes over as somewhat flimsy, though nothing has broken so far.
