1993 Citroen Xantia LX 1.7 TD

Summary:

The Best Car I have ever owned

Faults:

Absolutley nothing for 3years: just normal servicing.

Nearly lost the car after the parking brake cooled and released in camping site in Spain.

LH electric window failed 75000miles

Suspension units needed replacement 77000 miles.

General Comments:

I bought this car because of the legendary ride quality, great Peugeot Turbo diesel engine and it had looks to die for. I do not reckon Citroen or any other manufacture has produced a big saloon car that looks so perfect. Even now it is a head turner.

Performance, ride and handling lived up to expectations: though odd passengers complained of feeling car sick when piloting it at speed on mountain roads.

Fuel economy at up to 50mpg was quite remarkable I could drive from one end of France to the Other on little more than a tank or 2 of cheap French Diesel

I just loved this car

The only reason I changed it was that my mechanic said they started to fall apart after 70,000miles He was right; I kept the Car for a few more months and the suspension failed the week I put the Car up for Sale

Cest La Vie!

They were good cars, just not quite good enough to take on the likes of the Mondeo and some other rivals. The car's reliability is an interesting one - even the reviews on here seem to reflect what people I know who have had one say about the Xantia - some say they are bullet proof reliable and have had 100,000 + miles on them, others say they fell to bits at 80,000. I'd bet the car in general is more reliable then Renault's Laguna at the time, which always got low ratings for reliability.

1993 Citroen Xantia VSX 1.9

Summary:

You either love 'em or hate 'em and I adore 'em!

Faults:

A water leak creating a pool of water under, and rusting, the back nearside seat.

The hydraulic pump 'exploded' - the suspension is then almost on the wheels and this car is seriously heavy without the power steering!

The heater has a leak, so there is a constant smell of hot water when its on and it's in such a daft place you have to dismantle the whole dash to get to it - costly!

General Comments:

Mine was one of the first in the country - a lovely, if sometimes quirky car that I am loathe to part with, despite having bought another Xantia recently.

You can't beat the ride - so comfortable - and they're great for towing.

I wouldn't recommend a main dealer for repairs, they're far too expensive. I've found an excellent private garage that knows about Citroens and keeps both of mine going.

The head gasket lasted until 146,000 miles and the clutch to 144,000 miles.

The back section of the exhaust has only just been replaced, the rest is as when I bought her.

1993 Citroen Xantia LX 1.6i

Summary:

What a bargain - I love it!

Faults:

The front brake pads and disc's and back pads needed replacing.

The windscreen washers had an electrical fault with them.

I knew about both of these problems when I bought the car.

General Comments:

The car is quick off the mark.

It is very quiet when running.

It is very smooth on the motorway.

The suspension can play up sometimes. It can be very slow to rise, but not very often.

This car is a lovely ride and comfortably sits five adults.

1993 Citroen Xantia SX 1.6

Summary:

Decent, comfortable and economical (mostly)

Faults:

Front suspension spheres unreliable.

Suspension takes up to 3 minutes to rise.

General Comments:

Have discovered that this car drinks hydraulic fluid like there's no tomorrow.

Basically the Xantia is a great ride and easy to drive. There's plenty of head and leg room even though I'm 6ft5 tall.

The suspension is very very good once it's got going... but for the first few miles it's a little bit solid.

Tyres are cheap, and it doesn't wear them out excessively.

Very easy to park due to the lack of overhang at the back.

Replace the suspension spheres and change the LHM fluid regularly - suspension problems will vanish. Advanced engineering needs preventative maintenance!
