1999 Citroen Xsara VL 1.4i petrol

Summary:

Good, almost great, and I will be keeping it for a while longer yet

Faults:

Back brakes seized one day for a short while, then became free. When sent to the dealer in Enfield, they recommended replacing th whole back axle. And this was less than 10,000 miles after they replaced the brakes and cylinders before.

Only replaced the catalytic converter and exhaust 2 weeks ago (Aug '06) at 125,000 miles.

General Comments:

Has been very reliable at this mileage. Passed the NCT (D0E/MoT) with flying colours in 2005, and I am confident it will do the same in 2007.

1999 Citroen Xsara VTS 2.0

Summary:

Underrated pocket rocket, but build quality and dealers could be better

Faults:

On two occasions I left the ignition in the '1' position after stopping for a minute or so and turning the engine off. On restarting the car the engine backfired and literally blew apart the inlet manifold. The engine would just run with the revs rising and falling and it limped a mile or so home. The dealer repaired the car both times, but never gave a reason for the fault. I guess the fuel pump was still delivering fuel and this collected in the induction side of the engine?

After 70,000 miles the drivers seat started to squeak and become difficult to tilt forward for rear seat access. At around 140,000 miles the seat became so bad that the metal frame broke and the mounting welded to the floor broke off. The main dealer would not repair the seat as they said it was not fair wear and tear! The car was my company lease vehicle and went back after 3 years with a loose drivers seat. I wonder if it passed it's first MOT like that?

General Comments:

Apart from the faults above the car was a fantastic drive.

Its cornering ability was superb probably due in part to the passive rear wheel steering.

The non-turbo engine delivered power throughout the rev range and without the lag associated with turbo engines.

The interior was very well designed and with optional leather was very attractive.

The automatic wipers were very useful, switching on when rain was detected.

I liked the fact that the car looked fairly bland and nondescript, some drivers had a shock when they ignored the subtle VTS badge.

1999 Citroen Xsara Si Estate 1.8

Summary:

Would recommend to anyone

Faults:

Nothing at all.

General Comments:

The interior of the car both front and rear doesn't look like anyone has ever been in it. Looks superb, drives superb, good visibility. Was apprehensive as to this make as I had never owned one before, but this car has definitely changed my opinion all to the good.

1999 Citroen Xsara VTS 2.0 16v

Summary:

What a toy!

Faults:

About 6 months into my ownership, the engine repeatedly stalled when pulling up to traffic lights. the problem has now cleared itself up on its own.

In March 2004, my Remote central locking stopped working.

In April 2004, The drivers seat broke, after refusing to tip properly since I had the car. The seat anchor, holding it to the floor pan managed to snap.

General Comments:

The car has a few modifications to the inlet and the exhaust system, and sounds awsome when the engine revs get above 4200rpm.

I am not too impressed by the colour, as it is Metallic yellow, but it does show off the beautiful lines of the bodyshell.

Purchase one, and play!

1999 Citroen Xsara VTR 1.8 16v

Summary:

An understated beauty

Faults:

My boot does not lock when using the remote central locking.

Alarm went off every two hours.

General Comments:

This is my seconds Citroen after having a marvelous experience with my 1.1 SX Saxo. I decided to then spend my hard earned cash on my Xsara VTR.

It was an excellent bargain at only 5000 with 22K miles on the clock and a full Citroen service history.

The colour of this car is vital. Mine is in Bora Green and makes the great lines stand out. I have seen similar models in silver and they do not look this good.

I have had several problems in my 7 months of ownership. the major one being the alarm which went off every two hours until I disconnected the alarm siren. The boot would also not unlock when using the remote key fob prior to this.

The exhaust cracked but I put this down to the short distances it has travelled before I owned the car.

All of the lights on the dash would light up when cornering which was very disconcerting.

I am very unhappy with the way the dealers have dealt with my request to get these problems looked at. The customer service was very bad. However, these faults have all now been rectified.

Overall the car has been great and is just what I have wanted. Performance is great, especially after it goes past 3000 rpm.

Economy is fantastic.

This car stands out far more than your standard Focus and Astra and leaves you feeling great that you are not driving something everyone else has got.
