1995 Daewoo Espero CDXi 2.0

Summary:

A cheap car to buy and run with a lot of extras

Faults:

Electric sunroof tended to leak rainwater in heavy rain.

Boot has started to let water in.

ABS has never worked since owning the car.

Will be fixing these faults along with some slight rusting when the weather improves.

General Comments:

This is a cheap car to buy second hand now, and has a lot to offer with alloy wheels and air con.

It is easy to work on and parts are cheap as the engine and running gear are all pure GM/Vauxhall.

It starts easily even in freezing weather and runs very smoothly, I am returning 35mpg average including local and motorway runs.

Only down point is the quality of the interior, seats are not very comfortable and the heater is not warm enough.

1997 Daewoo Espero CDX 2.0 MPI

Summary:

Cheap and well spec'd, but a substandard car at the end of the day

Faults:

Head gasket blew at 55,000 miles.

A host of minor electrical faults.

General Comments:

For:

Very cheap to buy (£2,995 for a then four year old car with alloy wheels, a CD auto-changer, PAS, ABS and air-con).

Large spacious boot space and passenger compartment.

Relatively cheap to maintain, certainly cheaper than any other car of it's size.

Relatively modest fuel consumption - I averaged about 40mpg.

Against:

Inadequate performance for a 2 litre, barely 100bhp. 0-60 took a very long time, and although it cruised reasonably well at motorway speeds it did not have enough in reserve to maintain speed when overtaking or on an incline.

Handling left a lot to be desired, big awkward, and clumsy with PAS far too light. Downright dangerous in snow and ice.

Uncomfortable over long distances due to cheap seats. Very uncomfortable in the back.

Very badly built, with cheap plastic work forever coming unstuck, electrics shorting out all over the place and wires held in with nothing more than carpet tape falling out of their holders.

1997 Daewoo Espero GLXi 1.5 DOHC petrol

Summary:

A saloon car, plain and simple

Faults:

Minor things first:

Central Locking - intermittent fault.

Broken rear spring (probably worn by previous towing)

All main brake pipes corroded.

Minor rattle on camshaft.

Big End failed. Result was a con-rod through the side of the block = 1 dead engine.

General Comments:

Cheap plastic trim needs care and respect.

Generous load and passenger space.

High-spec for the cost of the vehicle.

Inoffensive, if a little bland, appearance.

Reasonable comfort for the class of car.

Not an ideal family car - trim, handles etc would be easily broken by boisterous children.

1996 Daewoo Espero CDi 1.8

Summary:

Comfortable, spacious and plenty of gadgets

Faults:

Electric starter had to be changed.

Recommended roof rack dented top of car.

Head gasket blew at 110,000 miles.

General Comments:

Most special features comes as standard, unlike other cars of its age.

Sounds keen and racy when idle, which I like.

More electrics than most houses.

Looks good with modifications, as car isn't well known, unrecognizable when De badged and extras added.

Unfortunately silver Grey version does not reach a high shine.

1996 Daewoo Espero CDi 1.8

Summary:

A wolf in sheep's clothing!

Faults:

Leaking sunroof caused clock to burn out, easy to replace and cheap.

Water pump went at 50,000 miles.

Rear suspension coils snapped at 58,000 miles, known fault, cheap to replace £20 for both.

General Comments:

This is my first car yet is the best I have driven, those being VW's, Fords and Vauxhalls.

When driven sensibly you get a good fuel return, yet it has plenty of low end pull and high end speed.

It Will do 80 MPH uphill in third without breaking into a sweat.

Daewoo say it will do 115 MPH top speed, but I have got it to do 130 as I have fitted K&N filter and a scorpion exhaust so it can breath.

This car will impress even the most skeptical as I have beaten almost every body who challenges me even a 2.0 turbocharged caverlier.

Generally it has a huge specification, with air conditioning and electric every thing also mine has a oversize sunroof as it is an ex-demonstrator model.

A cavalier turbo will do a top speed of nigh on 150mph and hit 60 in about 6 seconds.

It aint going to lose to a 115bhp car.

And I doubt you will get 15bhp from a filter and an exhaust.

You will be lucky to get 3-4bhp which is not really noticeable.
