2001 Daewoo Lanos S 1.4

Summary:

Reliable, and that's about it!

Faults:

Air directional knob stopped working so couldn't clear windscreen in winter.

Driver door window mechanism - wire snapped stopping window from moving.

General Comments:

Cabin quality is poor, really cheap feel plastics which have started to come apart in my car.

Various pieces of trim around the door have fallen off.

AWFUL acceleration.

The ride is rough on all roads but motorways where the frustration is purely down to lack of power.

Brakes aren't the best, and mine doesn't have ABS so can be a bit dicey in certain conditions.

Lots of body roll in corners where the car understeers badly.

The Lanos is however very reliable and mine has never broken down on me; no problems as of yet with the gearbox or the engine.

2001 Daewoo Lanos S SPECIAL EDITION 1.4

Summary:

A horror to drive

Faults:

Front suspension creaky and suspension is generally unstable.

Rear lights filled with water when vehicle was washed.

Brakes fail to slow car in an acceptable time even though replaced and checked by Daewoo dealer.

General Comments:

A very unstable car that feels like you have jelly for suspension and thin air for brakes.

The car looks good, but looks cannot make up for safety!.

After approx 11000.00 miles I had my second service which was done by Daewoo.

On my way to the service my brakes failed. The front pads had worn down so much they were almost non existent.

£100.00 For front pads and I still do not get good braking. Also both front tyres needing replacing again at 11000.00 miles. The daewoo dealer failed to tell me that this was because the tracking had gone.

Had the tracking done at an independent garage and the car was driving well again for about a month.

After this month the car seemed to have a mind of its own. Occasionally it feels like my rear wheels are leaving the road and I get flashed by drivers behind me.

Had car checked over recently to be told that there are no problems.

I have driven cars up to 12 years old and felt safer.

2001 Daewoo Lanos S Special Edition 1.4

Summary:

An absolute bargain

Faults:

No problems so far.

General Comments:

The car is great. It looks good and the drive is very smooth. Seats are far more comfortable than my previous car (a Ford Escort). Acceleration is better than I thought it would be for this price range.

The only problem I have encountered was not with the car, but with Daewoo's head office. The head office has a communication problem with its dealers.

Back in July I test drove a Lanos and later went on to order the Special Edition 5 door version.

I asked my dealer about it being a Limited edition, was there any restriction on colour availability. His reply was no, you can choose any colour including metallic or mica finishes, usually a chargeable extra.

I choose Pacific blue in mica finish and the order was supposedly accepted.

Two weeks after I was supposed to have taken delivery, I had not heard from Daewoo. I phoned them to be told that the car had been despatched and that they would look into it and get back to me. Later I received a call saying that the colour was unavailable.

I was given a run down of available colours and so chose again. Again the order was accepted. One week later exactly I got another call to say this colour was unavailable.

I was told only 2 colours were left, I chose what I thought was the better of the 2 and 2 days later I got a call to say the car was ready.

Despite all this I would like to say that the dealer could not have offered a better service, the problem was all down to head office.

The car is a bargain and I would recommend it to anyone.
