1994 Fiat Uno Start 999cc

Summary:

Oozes character, cheap first car

Faults:

6 months before I took ownership of the car, the exhaust had to be replaced.

General wear (tires, light bulbs air filter etc)

Strange rattle coming from front wheel/brake.

Exhaust making a deep growing noise, like a turbo...weird.

General Comments:

If coming to a hill, down into 2nd gear is a must unless your in high revs.

Quick on the flat, will give 1.3 Fiestas a run for their money!

Handling is supreme.

Light steering even without PAS.

Spacious, practical and well made.

Very cheap insurance compared to Peugeot 205 etc.

Just been through MOT and passed!

Sold to me for £350! Bargain!

1994 Fiat Uno I.E 1.0

Summary:

A fun, nippy little bargain. Brilliant!

Faults:

The clutch and front brake pads had to be replaced recently, although I suspect this was more down to a spot of 'enthusiastic' driving from me rather than any fault of the car.

The rear wheel arches are rusting slightly.

General Comments:

I have driven several other small engined hatch-backs, and I can tell you the UNO is the most fun by far! For a one litre car it's a little firecracker.

Cabin is a bit cramped, although I am six foot two.

1994 Fiat Uno i.e. S Start Plus 1.4 petrol

Summary:

A future classic

Faults:

Heater matrix valve replaced due to stress fracture causing a leak at 30,000 miles.

Feeble hand brake at the best of times.

Regular tightening at DIY service, of sump nuts required to avoid gasket weeping oil. Poor gasket seal of cam cover required silicone sealant to cure oil seepage.

General Comments:

Generally excellent car for the money and I'm not changing it yet for a while. Regular 40 mpg, nearer 50mpg on long holiday trips.

Summary:

Brilliant, brilliant - Oh and did I mention brilliant!

Faults:

I'll tell you something, Fiat dealers are absolute crap, I was told at 40,000 miles that I needed a new fuel sender unit, but when I checked it myself the pipes only needed tightening, one thing if you buy a Fiat, don't buy from a dealer!!

General Comments:

Brill car, lasted me 300,000 and it is still running like a dream. Engine takes a lot to break, I drove from Manchester to Glasgow doing 100mph all the way and considering the top speed is only supposed to be 92mph.

One thing I do advise is to avoid hills unless you are above 5000rpm.

Summary:

A good car with no fuss

Faults:

As can be seen above I have rated my car at 10 for reliability. It never fails to start. However, at 68,000 miles the head gasket failed and at approx. 62,000 miles the fuel pump became faulty. These however could fail at anytime. Nothing else has gone wrong with the car since I got it.

General Comments:

Very economical car. Very cheap to run and service. Some would say these cars lack power but for 999cc I think they're as good as others of their time.

1994 Fiat Uno ie Start 1.0

Faults:

Clutch fluid leaking and needed replacement of the fluid line.

Worn brakes, but that is just general wear.

Horn stopped working because the contacts had corroded and snapped off.

Other than that, the car is as new after 65,000 miles.

General Comments:

Very light car with good power to weight ratio at low speeds. A bit slow 40-60 mph but it can still manage 100mph on the motorway. Handling is reasonable for the class of car but I think it has dangerous understeer in high speed corners, but the car is easy to recover.

Only major fault is running out of power at speed, this makes overtaking a problem on single carriage way roads.

Completely agree - but I don't find the understeer dangerous. However, the skinny tyres can make it treacherous in the wet.

Agree that the skinny tires aren't great in the wet - which resulted in mine leaving the road as I left a roundabout. Complete write-off, which was a shame as it was a nice car to drive... in straight lines.

Basic Uno`s only had 135 section tyres, and if yours was fitted with these then the road holding and grip really does suffer. 135 is woefully inadequate, especially as a well sorted Uno (even small engined versions) can encourage spirited driving!

My old Uno 45 (999cc FIRE) had terrible grip on 135`s, so I upgraded to 155 section tyres. Made a tremendous difference!

Whatever engined Uno you have (except Turbo) try a decent 155 section tyre if you feel that grip is lacking. Not much point in going bigger than that as such a light car with too wide tyres will cause aquaplaning in the wet. Bear in mind as well, the Turbo versions were `only` fitted with 175 section tyres, albeit low profile.
