1984 Ford Capri Laser 2.0 petrol

Summary:

Retro fun!

Faults:

Well the engine needed rebuilt (I don't think the previous owner took good care of it) as it was burning oil, but I never got round to it. I just kept a top up bottle in the car. Oil was cheap back then!

Rust and more rust. I protected it as best I could and repaired when it needed it to get through MOT's.

Gear selector came loose.

Otherwise surprisingly reliable, it never let me down. I kept it serviced on time and changed the battery for a new one upon purchase.

General Comments:

1984 Capri, dark grey, Laser model, loved the look of this thing.

Not super fast, but fast enough. 2.0 engine made a nice sound upon acceleration. Managed 30 mpg as well taking it slow. For an 80's petrol car, this was good.

Classic look inside and out.

Very comfortable actually for its time. Loved long drives in this.

Original Ford wheels looked great.

It wasn't worth much when I had it (maybe £500?), it was just another old car on the roads, but now a mint one is worth thousands! Saw one on a classic website for sale recently at over £12,000! Wish I had kept this car! Sold it to a Ford enthusiast back in the year 2000 for a small amount of cash, but it needed work to be fair.

And no, I'm not interested in the new electric Capri from Ford, it has nothing to do with this car except the name. Shame on Ford for trying to market that car as a successor to this! I think I'd buy a 1990's Ford Probe before I bought anything modern from Ford again!

1984 Ford Capri 1.6LS Modified to 2.0i

Summary:

Bang for Buck the best there is!

Faults:

Usual teething troubles when trying to fit an engine into a car that wasnt designed for it.

Nothing goes wrong that hasn't been altered!

General Comments:

This car is the most fun I have owned, and though being constantly modified, it remains usable as a daily driver. 2.1 injection engine being built in garage, to replace my tired 2.0 injection in the car.

Don't let anyone tell you different, Capri's CAN Handle. They were not too stable from the factory, but a few simple alterations lets them out to their full potential. Can keep up with modern hot hatches in the corners all day long without breaking a sweat.

Only time a Capri will lose out to cars like that is in the wet, but that is when you can have some real fun.

Old, Dated, but brilliant fun, something you can't buy in the showrooms for less than £40k.

1984 Ford Capri Laser 2.0 petrol

Faults:

Nothing at all! In 24,000 miles! Now has over 130,000 on the clock.

General Comments:

Bought this car for £850, kept it a year, sold it for £750.

Cheap to run (30mpg driven hard), very quick (fast road cam), very comfortable recaros (from 280 special).

Best car you can buy for the money.

Nothing went wrong in 24,000 miles, it gripped in the dry (limpet) and was fun in the wet (black ice is grippier).

Only downside was police attention - lots of it!

Love this car - why can't Ford go back to making simple fast cars like this?

Back in the day I don't think I ever saw a Capri NOT drifting as it left roundabouts... ;)
