1990 Ford Escort Eclipse 1.3 HCS

Summary:

Great car, cheap to buy run and insure, and looks cool

Faults:

Oil leak from the sump (not very serious).

Central locking to rear drivers side door.

General Comments:

Great car, already done a lot of miles and I put another 10k on it.

Oil leaks from the sump, apparently because of how close the exhaust sits, 10 years of going from hot to cold have corroded the metal.

Respectibly fast for the engine size.

Nice thick tyres, holds the road well.

Engine rattles bad, can't be fixed easily (not the tappet's).

Reliable and great car.

I have one and what a beast of a little car, it goes alright as well.

1990 Ford Escort XR3i EFi 1.6 petrol

Summary:

A good reliable car

Faults:

Cam seal was leaking lots of oil.

Stem seals needed replacing (x8).

Throttle control sensor needed replacing.

Temperamental idle control valve.

Gearbox replaced.

Rear brake cylinder was leaking.

General Comments:

This car is reasonably quick and economical.

The 90spec spoiler and front bumper is a nice touch compared to the pre-90spec XR3i's.

On bumpy roads suspension is very hard, but corners well on smooth roads.

Have driven a MK4 MFi XR3i and found it is more responsive lower down in the rev band the EFi seems to pick up at about 4000rpm.

Overall a good cheap car and pleasant to drive.

1990 Ford Escort RS 1.6

Summary:

The car is one beast of a machine

Faults:

Theres not really anything gone major with my RS up to yet, I've had a few electrical faults including the heating. It takes ages to warm up the car and it dosn't clear the windows properly.

General Comments:

The car drives superb it handles like its on rails.

However the brakes are prety poor as standard.

1990 Ford Escort 1.6i EFI

Summary:

An all round reliable and High performance oldie (keep your new cars) the old ones are the best

Faults:

Had to replace worn camshaft and cam followers at 51000 miles.

Had to replace full exhaust system.

Air flow problems with all models of the crank case ventilation system. Had to revert to the Mk1 Trap for best performance.

General Comments:

Comfort becomes an issue unless Recaro seats are fitted. With Recaro seats you feel like part of the car and this makes driving the XR3i an enjoyable experience.

The power of the EFi engine is great and its always there when you need it.

Handling is superb no doubt about that.

1990 Ford Escort Eclipse 1.3 petrol

Summary:

Perfect base car for modifying. (If you get a good one)

Faults:

Handbrake loose. 2 min job though.

Brakes a bit worn. MOT Failure.

Tracking gone. Get this sorted because it's a pain in the bum.

Exhaust front section kept coming loose-Big Bore 4 on the way!

General Comments:

This car is great to start modifying. Mine had FSH so it was running sound.

Electric Windows and Central Locking is good. Fitted Remote Central locking alarm which is cool.

Comes with RS Turbo spoiler as standard. All you need is vents, bumpers, sideskirts and spotlights!

RS Alloys will look good, I just can't find any!

Car is quite quick, beats Nova 1.0/1.2s and canes MK2/3 Fiesta's. Struggles to keep up with a full car load.

A very respectable first car, insurance will be high unless you are on someone else's policy.

I'm sorry, but the words 'quick'and 'Escort Eclipse' should never appear in the same paragraph, let alone sentence! I had on of these cars and it is a reasonable car, no doubt. It is most definitely not a good modifying base, unless your first mod is to sell it and buy something faster. The best things about it were the brake feel and the pedal positions that were good for practicing my toe and heel technique.

RAW.

1990 Ford Escort Sport 1.6

Summary:

Cheap to buy, reliable and fun

Faults:

Goes through exhausts - replaced every section now!

Rust in back wheel arches, getting worse all the time. Lot of welding to pass its MOT.

General Comments:

Quick, reliable and smart looking hatch.

Good stereo and sunroof add to the quality feel.

Sits on the motorway, and can be thrown around corners (even if the handling is not great, the engine has torque enough to catch the slide and slingshot you forwards).

Watch the insurance though...
