1997 Ford Fiesta Encore 1.3

Summary:

I would not buy another because of the terrible fuel consumption

Faults:

Rusty wheel arches.

Broken road spring.

Rear wheel cylinders.

Brake pipes and hoses.

All replaced and repaired by myself, and I considered each of these a wear and tear item due to age.

General Comments:

I liked it. It was old when I bought it, and I ran it for 2yrs.

The interior was in incredible condition, and was still good when I got rid of it.

Insurance wasn't bad, performance and comfort were acceptable, but did find that tyre brands made a phenomenal difference to road noise.

Handling was superb, never any problems wet or dry.

My only complaint was the fuel consumption. The best I ever achieved on a run was 49mpg, and the norm was around 40mpg. This was all longish distances, minimum journey time an hour, and all on major roads, not exceeding 60mph. I considered this a nonsense for the size of the engine, and the way I drove. (It was the 60bhp variant, although my friend's 50bhp variant was exactly the same.)

I am not being funny, but what do you expect on an engine where it dates back to the 1960's, the basics of it. I would have said 49 mpg as the best is good. If you want good fuel consumption, then buy a more modern engine. Even an average of 40 mpg isn't bad even today's standards.

Jeez fella - sorry, but in my opinion, for a car of the age/type/mileage, I think that MPG figure is perfectly acceptable, if not better than that really. Not sure what you are expecting, but if you look around the posts in the Fiesta threads of a similar year and type, I reckon you are bang on the money there.

1997 Ford Fiesta 1.3 petrol

Summary:

Unreliable, would not recommend it

Faults:

Accelerator cable is causing problems.

Bushings worn.

Interior of car is getting raggy.

There is only room for 5 digits on the mile clock, e.g. it now clocks at 66000 miles, but it could be 166000 miles as there is no space for front digit.

General Comments:

Haven't had the car that long and the previous owner would not have driven far in it but it has given me considerable trouble since I bought it.

Cannot rely on it for long journeys.

Plugs and leads.

Welding.

General Comments:

I love my little car, but at the moment I have a really bad cutting out problem, she cuts out at every island and every junction she can find, and this is driving me mad, but if I let the throttle off slowly she will tick over. HELP!!! Other than that she is great :o)

1997 Ford Fiesta Si 1.4

Summary:

It is my best friend

Faults:

The top hinge on the drivers door snapped, and the door nearly fell off a couple of years ago around 45,000 miles.

The rear washer was always temperamental, and eventually passed away about 12 months ago; got another one from the scrap yard, which is also temperamental!

Rear screen only demists on the upper and lower bars, and the middle waits for the heat to stretch across.

Now at the ripe old age of 10, it is drinking oil, and the nearside anti-roll thing is making a lot of noise.

General Comments:

It goes to the garage in a couple of weeks with a plea to my mechanic to save it, as I really love this car, even with the problems. It is the best car I have had, and I feel I will have trouble finding one I like as much for a price I can afford.

It is very comfortable, economical and seriously ticks people off on the motorway when I keep up with all the big boys and pass quite a few of them. It is great cornering as well.
