1999 Ford Fiesta Zetec 1.25 petrol

Summary:

A good reliable car with solid residuals

Faults:

General wear and tear mainly. I have always had it serviced at a main dealer, which is a little pricier.

The throttle body needed replacement at 40000 miles (shown by a sticking throttle pedal) at about £200.

My car has air con which sometimes drips water in the passenger foot-well, apparently a blocked breather pipe (fixed in the last service)

General Comments:

This is a good cheap car, bits are cheap and readily available.

Fuel consumption is a bit heavy for such a small engined car, at 35mpg.

Overall I am very happy with the car, it is a bit small for me, but totally reliable and cheap to run.

Your dripping problem in the passenger side could possibly be caused by the seal going round the windscreen. Mine dripped when it rained heavily and the carpet got soaked. A friend said the windscreen seal was a common problem. I replaced a cracked windscreen and have not suffered from the dripping since.

1999 Ford Fiesta Ghia 1.4

Summary:

Beautiful

Faults:

Rocker gasket, highlighted on the last service, but what do you expect; I am doing 10,000 mile every 12 weeks.

General Comments:

This car cruises on the moterway.

1999 Ford Fiesta Finesse 1.3

Summary:

A repair shops worst nightmare

Faults:

The brakes constantly go wrong.

The doors sometimes don't unlock and have to get in from the passengers door.

Back seats won't hold in their screws so can't have any rear passengers.

General Comments:

The car goes like rocket when your in there on your own and push it hard, but that's all that I can say good about it.

The design looks like it was done on the back of someones scrap paper.

The amount of repairs this car needs seriously outweighs the worth of it, just make sure if you do buy one that you get warranty.

I don't see how this person can complain about the looks of the car, if they didn't like it then why did they buy it?

If the previous owner of this car was a woman (no offense) then you WILL have problems with the brakes. And was the door locking mechanism properly looked after?

1999 Ford Fiesta Zetec 1.4 Zetec

Summary:

A nippy reliable car

Faults:

Gear linkage problem at 10000 miles.

Engine blew at 84000 miles (big ends) new engine currently being sourced hopefully a 1.6

General Comments:

Car has been very very reliable engine problem due to having a heavy right foot.

Interior is still rattle free after all the abuse I have given it.

Still handles well. Still on all suspension components it came out of the factory with.

Even if you do have a heavy right foot, engines shouldn't need replacing after 84,000 miles. It is hardly reliable.

1999 Ford Fiesta Zetec 1.4i

Summary:

Cheetah in Tortoises Clothing!!!

Faults:

Passenger side electric window motor sluggish.

Brake Disc's Warped after 25000 miles.

General Comments:

An excellent example of how to build a small car.

Engine is generously powerful yet economic for its size.

Steering is superb, especially when optional spoiler and alloys are present.

Brakes are excellent with optional Automatic Braking System package.

Not a family car, hence very little room when the front seats are moved back.

Parts are relatively expensive for customer bracket.

Interior is very dated.

In car entertainment only comes with two front speakers including separate tweeters.

1999 Ford Fiesta Finesse 1.3i

Summary:

An entertaining, but ultimately unreliable car

Faults:

Exhaust (back section) had to be replaced at 18,000 miles.

Front wiper electrics blew at 21,000 miles dues to water seeping into unit. Fixed under warranty.

Starter motor and battery failed at approximately 26,000 miles.

Power steering hose replaced at approximately 40,000 miles.

Seats becoming saggy.

General Comments:

This car is still quite pretty (especially at the back), but is starting to date a little now.

The Finesse was based on the basic model, but added metallic paint, tilt sunroof, and power steering.

This is a basic car with a rather basic engine. Don't be fooled by the 1.3 designation - the engine is based on an ancient design from the Anglia and it thrashes at times and does not develop huge amounts of power.

On the positive side, the car is built on a great chassis which means that handling is superb for a small car.

Comfort levels are fine for short journeys, but a strain on a longer haul.

Build quality is OK, but the cabin plastics are quite poor and the seats don't last that well.

Fuel consumption is appalling for such a small car and oil needs to be topped up every 4,00 miles (this is on a fully serviced example!).

I agree that interior build quality on these models is poor, as my seats are beginning to separate from the plastic fittings used to move them forward. However, I disagree with the comments made on fuel consumption. Mine is also a fully serviced 1.3 Finesse, and I regularly get 100 miles or more from a quarter of a tank of petrol. I also do not have to replace the oil very often, and have done over 700 miles so far without having to top it up. In fact, the level has barely gone down, despite the fact that the car has a slight oil leak!

Your comment that the engine is based on the old Anglia unit is incorrect. The Zetec engine is an entirely different engine. Designed in conjunction with Yamaha in the early 1990's and introduced in 1250cc guise a few years later. The first 1250cc versions had an iron block (certainly not related to the old Anglia 105E pushrod unit) and changed to all alloy construction around the '98 model year.

But this isn't the 1.25 Zetec engine. This review is for the 1300 pushrod "Endura-E", engine which is in fact based on a Kent block.
