Dreary drive, a no pleasure experience

Awful engine, slow, noisy and rough.

Feels like a cheap Korean car.

What do you mean by sounds great? Mine sounds like a ship's foghorn on startup.

About the foghorn sound. Ford internally calls this sound "Moosing". Visit http://www.contour.org (Ford Contour = American Ford Mondeo). You can find a fix to this sound there.

1998 Ford Mondeo Ghia 2.0L

Summary:

A big value Ford with good handling and performance, let down by many known faults

Faults:

Need a new relay for the boot release button.

CD not accepting CD disks (Error code E16).

Driver's seat back rest worked lose.

Rear nearside electric window sometimes sticks.

General Comments:

Great drivers car, fast and very comfy.

Build quality acceptable.

Good value for money.

I accept the minor faults since it's a very mass produced car for reps.

Interior is best in its class.

1998 Ford Mondeo Ghia X 2.5 V6

Summary:

Excellent value

Faults:

Nothing.

General Comments:

The car has excellent performance and a superb specification, but despite it being top of the range there is little to visually differentiate it from an LX. However for the amount of car you get for your money this can easily be overlooked.

1998 Ford Mondeo Verona 1.8i

Summary:

Superb value for money

Faults:

It was recalled by Ford for a rear brake valve change. That's it!

General Comments:

Great value for money.

Great performance, comfort, economical and it looks great.

The alloys have got to be one of the best sets that Ford have ever made. It's in Cuirass metallic. I love the damn thing! I wouldn't swap it for any car in its class.

1998 Ford Mondeo Ghia X 2.5 V6

Summary:

Very comfortable

Faults:

Front subframe alignment eg. car pulling constantly to the left.

Windscreen broken by Ford while in for a service, apparently incorrect use of vehicle lifting gear causes the body to flex. Ford as usual refused to take responsibility.

General Comments:

Nice car, shame about the dealers!!!!!!

I have experienced similar windscreen cracking on my V6 Ghia X.

Also a broken nearside front spring, both of which I am told are common faults on this model, but both are unrecognised by Ford.

1998 Ford Mondeo Ghia X 2.0 16V

Summary:

Luxury motoring on a budget

Faults:

Absolutely nothing.

General Comments:

A very comfortable car with every conceivable extra (leather, a/c, cruise control, power seats, multi-CD etc) which has proven to be very cheap to run - low servicing costs, 35 mpg+. My only complaint is that the 2.0 engine is a little coarse and needs to be worked hard to get any real performance.

1998 Ford Mondeo ST24 5 Door 2.5 V6

Summary:

A high performance sports saloon worth paying a bit extra for

Faults:

Absolutely nothing has gone wrong with this car!

General Comments:

The V6 engine is gutsy and responsive. The low profile tyres and sports suspension provide a superb ride.

The body kit and RS alloys make it stand out from ordinary Mondeos and gives it a bit of exlusivity despite the blue oval badge!

Downsides - insurance high, petrol economy not great if you push it and be prepared to pay at least £130 for tyres.

I still look forward to driving it every single day!
