1998 Ford Mondeo ST24 2.5 V6 petrol

Summary:

A fast, reasonable priced car. Well equipped, slighty greedy

Faults:

I would probably still have it today if I had not been involved in a crash where the car written off. But it did have a gearbox design problem.

General Comments:

The Mondeo ST24 in practical terms was basically in the same type bracket as my previous car, the Vauxhall Vectra, that is they are both 2.5 V6 engines but I felt there was always a problem with the Vectra's gearbox. Later on I was to find out from Vauxhall Luton that they were actually fitted with a SAAB gear box that is only in the 2.5 V6 models. The Mondeo is definitely the better of the two cars, but I must say I enjoyed them both.

1998 Ford Mondeo LX TD 1.8 turbo diesel

Summary:

Family

Faults:

A/C broke, but they fixed it under warranty.

General Comments:

Comfortable, good mpg, never failed yet.

Engine a little bit noisy on the motorway, but what you expect from a diesel?

Can be very fast when the turbo gets going. Lovely car.

I have had a Mondeo GLX TD Estate for the past 4 years, it has covered 200,000 miles (private use), with maintenance costs of £200.... £50 a year.

I have done all the work myself which was 2 timing belts, 1 side handbrake cable, bottom ball joint and a set of discs.

I am still on the original clutch and exhaust.

I have not included tyres because I count them as wear and tear.

1998 Ford Mondeo LX with A/C 2.0 petrol

Faults:

The screen washer hose got nipped in the bonnet/hood hinge, causing the hose to blow off the reservoir. Took about half an hour to fix (a valence has to come off).

General Comments:

Great handling. Smooth. Quick enough. 1st, 2nd and 3rd are geared for town use rather than open road, but you live with it. I get 32mpg average; up to 36.5mpg on a high speed run - and that's after allowing for a 6% over-reading odometer.

1998 Ford Mondeo LX Verona 1.8

Faults:

Nothing really - fingers crossed.

General Comments:

Really good car. Surprised me greatly, as I used to own a Sierra which was a nasty piece of work. Air Con was a nice bonus but does smell a little and affect performance when on. Radio is inferior to anything else in this price range I looked at. Other than that, the engine is smooth and responsive, ride is relatively firm and handling excellent. My high miles do not appear a problem for it (as I expected) and running costs are very reasonable. However, wife still thinks it looks boring :-)

1998 Ford Mondeo LX 1.8 turbo diesel

Faults:

Nothing of consequence. All in all seems to be a very well put together car.

General Comments:

Driving refinement is high, engine is smooth, refined and revs freely. Was surprised at how comfortable the car is in general and the roadholding is sure and compliant.

It's an extremely well specified car and I have found the standard air conditioning and cd player extremely useful and are "must have" features. In addition, it's an excellent load carrier with a capacious boot and seats 5 adults in comfort.

1998 Ford Mondeo Ghia X 2.5 V6 24v manual petrol

Faults:

Nothing with car, but was supplied new with 97 Ghia wheels, dealer refused to accept incorrect wheels fitted. Eventually got right ones but tyres had done 5000ish miles (independent opinion), also covered with brake dust and needed balancing out. Problem ongoing with fomoco. Absolutely disgusted with dealers pathetic service. I'm convinced someone at the dealer had taken a 'shine' to the chrome alloys and had swapped them over and hoped I wouldn't have noticed. DEFINITELY will not be taking my car there for servicing.

General Comments:

Fantastic performance from engine, interior is a driver's and passenger's delight. Handling and ride are exceptional. Vulnerable to stone chips on front. Slightly disappointed with quality of leather trim for a twenty grand car. Radio sound and ease of use is very good. All the controls are perfectly positioned and look good. Excellent visibility. Much much better than Vectra I test drove. Why do the door mirrors have to be so small? MPG reasonable. Noise supression excellent and engine virtually inaudible at tickover. I really like and enjoy driving this car and would recommend it to anyone.

1998 Ford Mondeo ST24 5 door 2.5 V6 petrol

Faults:

Occasional grinding noise after releasing handbrake.

Blew fuses for electric drivers seat height adjustment.

Cloth trim on door surround has bubbled.

General Comments:

15K in 6 months. Comfortable tourer rather than out-and-out sports car. Very satisfied with handling, refinement, brakes. Acceptable fuel economy.

1998 Ford Mondeo ST24 5dr 2.5 V6 petrol

Faults:

A surround for the front fog lamp disappeared about a week after delivery, if it was stolen or fell off is unknown. The dealer has been pretty slow to sort it out, 8 weeks and still waiting.

General Comments:

The car is a joy to drive, the stereo is excellent, the fuel economy isn't great but I never expected it to be.

On the whole a nice drive and a car that people always comment on and say that it is nice looking.

1998 Ford Mondeo Ghia X 2.5 V6 petrol

Faults:

Absolutely nothing.

General Comments:

Absolutely the dogs bollocks.

The Vauxhall Vectra 2.5 I had before this cannot hold a candle toward this Ford, in all areas, particularly in the handling department. FORD, I LOVE YOU!!!!!
