2013 Ford Mondeo ECOnetic Graphite 1.6 TDCi

Summary:

Smart

Faults:

EGR valve, suspension ball joints, brakes, small oil leak, exhaust, usual wear and tear, nothing serious.

Tiny patch of rust on the lower part of the driver's door.

Lately the airbag warning light came on, I hope it wont cost too much to fix.

General Comments:

The Mondeo of all generations is a fine car and consummate all rounder. My 2013 car still feels modern today in 2025.

ECOnetic 1.6 diesel is very economical. I regularly got over 50 mpg without trying. It is not a fast car however, but for daily driving you will find it adequate. Mind you, I'd probably prefer the bigger 2.0 TDCi engine.

Inside is comfortable and spacious. Very good quality feel, surprising for a Ford! "Graphite" is a very basic model, but the car still has A/C and electric windows. Outside it has the same nice looking alloy wheels typically found on Zetec models.

Rear passenger and boot space is huge. It is the ideal family car. Very practical.

Good looking silver, common color.

Nice to drive. Cheap tax and insurance.

Hard to say much more, just hope it stays reliable, but it is over a decade old and approaching the infamous 100,000 mile mark, so like any car I should expect some repairs to be done. But I will keep it - the value for money is still the best for this type of car; taking into account all running costs, it is reliable and economical, and one of the better cars I have bought.

2013 Ford Mondeo Zetec 2.0 TDCi

Summary:

Mediocre

Faults:

Was OK the first year or so, then gradually had lots of expensive annoying problems; electronics (key fob issues), door seal leaks, rust on arches, a/c died, etc.

Injectors failed, costly to put right (over £500).

Glow plugs, also expensive.

Oil leak in its last year with me.

Clutch + flywheel, fair wear and tear at the mileage, but also was going to be expensive. I cut my losses and sold the car for scrap at this point.

And yes I took care of it (every service + cam-belt, driven carefully, no neglect).

General Comments:

When it was running OK, this Mondeo was fast, smooth, comfortable and economical.

I loved the looks and how it drove. Plenty of space also.

But I looked after this car well and it still came apart with expensive issues far too early as far as I am concerned. I had a 1994 mk1 Mondeo way back in the day, and it ran till 170K before any issues, but this 2013 car felt dead with a lot less mileage!

Shame really, it was a lovely car, but I have since moved onto a Vauxhall Insignia, which believe it or not, seems much better.

You got unlucky. The 2.0 TDCi diesels in these cars are usually OK when looked after. The "ecoboost" petrols on the other hand are terrible.

2013 Ford Mondeo Zetec 2.0 TDCi

Summary:

Nothing special

Faults:

Clutch, DPF, oil leak.

Electronics, and key fob issues / locking.

General Comments:

Performance and comfort levels of this large family / executive car from Ford are spot on for the money. Good looking car and very nice to drive.

Zetec model gets plenty of kit and the car is spacious.

2.0 TDCi can manage around 50 mpg with good overtaking ability. Fantastic motorway cruiser.

Sadly my car has been average in the reliability department. The car was looked after well and has low mileage for its age in my opinion. The clutch and DPF were very expensive to fix. Ford dealer was uninterested and I had to find a trusted independent who was still expensive. What's the point of diesel if the money you save on fuel goes on expensive repairs? I have heard even the petrol engines in this car are no good.

Also the car is good but no better than a Honda Accord, Toyota Avensis or Vauxhall Insignia. Even the Kia Optima can do the same for less.

So overall a pretty average car. They are way overpriced on the used market. I don't know if I would buy again.

I had similar issues with my Mondeo. Shame lots of problems ruined an otherwise fine car!
