2004 Honda Accord Exec 2.0

Summary:

Noisy

Faults:

The car makes a high-pitched whining sound in 5th gear at between 75 and 82 mph.

I returned the car back to the dealer who could not help me. After countless telephone conversations with Honda UK they eventually sent an engineer to test-drive the car.

His report is as follows – ‘the transmission whine described by the customer and experienced by myself is a noise common to this model of Honda Accord. A report was submitted by Honda UK technical support department at the time of model launch. Reply from Honda Japan R&D was noise was caused by helical gears used with the transmission, there is no way of elevating this noise and the noise is not detrimental to the economic life of the transmission so is regarded a trait of the transmission design.’ So in other words I will just have to put up with it, but hopefully if you have read this you won't.

The drivers seat moves sideways when going around corners. The fixings were replaced under warranty.

I guess this Accord was built in Ohio too? I know that there are no bad Hondas or Acuras coming out of Japan. Who make up this crap anyway? A design flaw is a design flaw, regardless of country. Acuras have had bad trannys (manual and automatic) and other problems from rigt from Japan. Yep, hard to believe from a perfect culture, but true.

I think the UK accord is different from the American version, the UK version is very similar to Acura TSX.

Summary:

Great engine, pity about the noisy cabin!

Faults:

Consumed a lot of engine oil; didn't register on the dipstick after 5000 miles. Dealer topped up, will monitor!

Rattles in the interior; left-hand side between the dashboard and the windscreen. Dealer eased the rattling (but not fully)

Rubber window and door seals are noisy. Dealer sprayed silicon lubricant on seals which has reduced noise levels but this will need to be done regularly!

Note: This car is assembled in Japan, I didn't expect these type of basic faults!

General Comments:

Road noise (tyre roar) is appalling!

Tyres: Michelin Pilot Primacy.

Multifunction steering wheel buttons are not back lit (very annoying at night)

Great handling, yet comfortable, good for long distance cruising!

New diesel engine is excellent, good economy, great performance (loads of torque @2000 rpm)

50+ mpg is achievable on long journeys.

Well equipped (executive spec)

The window rattles are endemic to this car. I have driven three Tourers now (first one rejected and replaced due to problems too numerous to mention, second was a loan, while the third one the replacement) - all of them rattle. The window rattles are now subject to a Technical Service Bulletin (check with your dealer). This involves replacing the window seals. It DOES NOT work. My replacement vehicle now rattles after just 2,000 miles, though I am told it was built with the new seals. There are also reports from Japan that they don't work. Looks like there's no fix for the problem, well not one that Honda will want to spend a lot of money on.

2004 Honda Accord Tourer CTDI 2.2

Summary:

I look forward to long journeys

Faults:

No faults so far.

After 4500 miles the engine had used some oil. It had dropped from the top line on the dipstick to the bottom line. Dealer topped the oil level up and told me the amount of oil used would drop as mileage increased. By 8500 miles the oil level had dropped again. Dealer topped it up, it would appear to be getting better.

General Comments:

Diesel engine economy OK. Worst 41mpg. Best 50mpg.

Comfort is great.

Performance is statisfactory. Overtaking is easy, cruise at 100mph doing 3000rpm.

Loading carrying fantastic. Handling OK when empty and when full.
