1989 Honda CRX 1.6 16v

Summary:

The fastest N/A 1.6 ever!!!

Faults:

Nothing much!! Routine maintenance i.e. the distributor cap, rotor arm and spark plugs!

General Comments:

I have only had the car a few months. A cliche yes, but it is the best car I have ever owned, by far! Nothing comes close. Driving my mum's mk4 Golf feels as if it is so disconnected!! Is it dead? You feel everything through the wheel. In the CRX - you are the car!!! New tyres and your arms get tired, you have that much grip!

I consider it the modern classic that you can hammer!!! Give it the punishment and it just rewards you!!! Awesome!

Mine is special, 89K, two owners, and I race the VTECs!! They say it is quicker, and it is, but only marginally, not as much as they say! Up to 140mph, my mate in the VTEC pulled maybe 5m max (extra 20bhp standard and filter and exhaust), (I was on his bumper (draughting)) so wow, is it worth the extra £1000 for the type of condition and engine, I severely doubt it!! The d16a9 has manic top end shove, it is like the VTEC, but cheaper! The VTEC has a gradual 3000rpm shove, yet the 16v has 2000rpm, which is awesome by yourself with no fuel!!! And in today's standard spec, can still have the diesel specs for dead!!! The Golf TDI 130, 150bhp mk4, it eats them, same till 4000rpm, then the Rex just leaves them for dead!!!

REPS beware, you have no idea when it says 1.6 on the back!!!

1989 Honda CRX 1.6 16v 1.6 16v

Summary:

Honda bring these cars back!!!

Faults:

Nothing much more than the usual wear and tear brakes, radiator CV joints etc. I can't complain it is 14 years old now. Dealer is expensive so avoid. On shopping around (it takes some amount of looking some of the parts!) you can get parts for a great deal less than what the dealer is asking.

General Comments:

Same as most CRX's out there the rust is starting to take hold around the rear arches wings etc, shame you can't buy these cars from Honda anymore or I would be slamming a deposit down right now for another one. Seats are great, really comfortable and I recon this is probably one the best front wheel drive cars you can find. It doesn't hurt the wallet to drive it either mine returns around 42mpg. Its always good at keeping the boy racers at bay as well will beat any corsa or astra GSI / SRI. Reliable too, so far done 176K miles and it always starts first time every time.

1989 Honda CRX Si 1.6

Summary:

Honda need to re-launch this car!

Faults:

Slight judder from the clutch when pulling away from rest.

Rear brake bulb (!)

General Comments:

I looked at three CRX's before settling on the one I bought. I found enormous variations in the price and condition - do not buy the first car you see!

I've forced people to borrow the CRX because I want as many people as possible to drive one - they really are as good as the reputation and everyone has been impressed.

The cabin is very well made and comfortable, and I have just used mine to move house - several trips required, but there is a reasonable amount of space with the seat folded down!

The handling is wonderful although the car doesn't like pot-holes under acceleration. There is lots of grip and the car corners very flatly.

The only thing I would change would be the standard alloys which are a bit dated now - a modern set would finish the car off. A bodykit is definitely not on the agenda!

As a guide to a price, mine was totally standard and came with full history. In November 2001 I negotiated £2500 down to £2250.

Technically, the CRX hasn't left. The CRX is gen. 1 of a (so far) 3 generation group, the del Sol is gen.2 and the S2000 is gen. 3.

I have heard about them bringing back the CRX for 2005-2006...
