2004 Hyundai Matrix GSi 1.6

Summary:

Unbeatable, cheap, practical car

Faults:

Never goes wrong.

General Comments:

My wife needed a new car, and we weren't considering a Hyundai at all, but this one came up for sale at a local car dealer for such a good price, that it was difficult to ignore. I went into the test drive thinking I would hate it, but was very surprised by the way it drove. Very composed, quiet, and it gives you the feeling it is well put together.

Bearing in mind how much these cars cost to buy, it is difficult to fault the Matrix. It is comfortable, very practical, parts are cheap, and there is enough power on tap for overtaking when required. It never fails the MOT, and shows no sign that it likely to any time soon.

If you need a cheap, practical car that is very easy to live with, look no further.

2002 Hyundai Matrix CDI 1.5

Summary:

I do a lot of miles, give me a bigger diesel

Faults:

Rear wiper blade does not bear on glass.

General Comments:

1.5 diesel underpowered for my needs.

Would prefer the extra cylinder and go to 2.0 litre.

Having done 60,000 miles in about 28 months and finding only the rear wiper performance to complain about, I think the question is answered before it is asked.

2003 Hyundai Matrix GLS 1.6 petrol

Summary:

Good value

Faults:

Only issue is with the right hand indicator self cancellation. This occurs too early and I deem this as nuisance with a potential safety flavor. For example when turning right, particularly around a UK roundabout the right indicator will often cancel prior to proper left lock to straight. This could be interpreted as a change in my option by other drivers and hence the safety issue. Vehicle supplier, and Hyundai central customer services report my concern as a model characteristic rather than a flaw and conclude the issue is normal and unservicable.

General Comments:

No other issues with car which is quick & reliable and multi-functional in proportion to cost.

2003 Hyundai Matrix GSi 1.6

Summary:

A good family car

Faults:

A stiff gear change, that has never gotten smoother.

General Comments:

The demonstration model was a pleasure to drive.

It is an extremely comfortable car, with good all round visibility and very roomy.

2003 Hyundai Matrix GLS 1.6 petrol

Summary:

A great, safe car for the family

Faults:

NOTHING.

General Comments:

After not being sure about owning a "budget" Korean car, my doubts have been dispelled.

The Matrix is an excellent family car, comfortable, roomy, dead easy to drive and I can get more into it than my old Cavalier.

If I had believed the reviews I would not have bought it.

After a test drive with all the family we were convinced that this was the car for us.

I have had to get used to lack of mpg compared to my old diesel!

Six months on and I can confirm that our Matrix is proving itself to be an extremely reliable, comfortable family vehicle.

Cannot understand why the British motoring press are so keen to knock Hyundai's down so much. Try reading some American reviews on-line, they seem to love them!

My advice would be to try for yourself, don't be put off by all the "badge snobbery" that exists in the UK!

4 years of total trouble free motoring. I can report that the Matrix is the most reliable car I have ever owned.

Sad to see it go, but had to replace it with the excellent i30.

Road tax in the UK for a small family MPV is unacceptable - £210 PA, set to rise to £300 next year!

2002 Hyundai Matrix CDX 1.8

Summary:

Loved the car, now I cannot rely on it!

Faults:

Rev counter shoots up to 2500 revs on deceleration. Intermittent fault.

Poor fuel consumption - 16 miles per gallon compared with stated 24.

Loss of poor at around 2000-2500 revs and car fails to accelerate, although it was previously driving well.

General Comments:

Car was excellent when first purchased and I was pleasantly surprised at the acceleration for a large vehicle.

One month after purchase I noticed a decrease in performance and loss of power.

The dealership could not find a fault on any diagnostic tests and it has taken four months for them to admit there is a fault.

The high tension leads, spark plugs, injectors and immobilizer have been replaced and acceleration is slightly better, but still not up to scratch.

Descriptive and realistic comments. Initial response of car was good. Rear tyres wear off faster than front tyres, and then faster than normal. Tyres down to worn off mark after six months (or about 15000 km). Agent unable to find cause for uneven wearing off of one tyre.

Regarding the premature tyre wear, I experienced that too. After a few months driving the car, the rear tyre wears out waaaay faster than the fronts. Weird! I thought it's the new street near my house that's concrete. And it's probably the Kumho tyre as well.
