2004 Jaguar X-Type Classic 2.0 turbo diesel

Summary:

Excellent - the affordable, classic modern Jaguar

Faults:

Surprisingly failed the MOT in 2008 - worn bush on nearside rear suspension, which required replacing the small swinging arm complete.

General Comments:

I love this Jaguar - great classic Jaguar looks (baby XJ!) with a lovely torquey, silky smooth diesel engine. Great to drive with more than enough power, very economical (46mpg average), & comfortable.

A personal comment - don't like hearing the car slagged off by "BMW snobs." Have ridden in a few BMWs over the years (3 & 5 Series) & found them about as comfortable as a park bench!

2004 Jaguar X-Type SE 2.0 diesel

Summary:

Disappointing

Faults:

New clutch, flywheel and persistent misfire. Goes into Limp Home mode.

General Comments:

What a disappointment. My first and last Jag. Lovely looking car, but poorly built, unreliable and dynamically no better than a family hatchback to drive.

Are you surprised? It's only a Mondeo in a Jag shell.

If you want a real Jag, you want an XJ Auto with all the extras.

I have had three and you cannot beat them.

2004 Jaguar X-Type Estate 2.5 AWD

Summary:

This is a fantastic car when it works

Faults:

After a few months of ownership, the remote keyfob batteries seemed to fail, but on returning to Jag they said it was some kind of programming problem, and it was not as simple as just batteries. This was a MINOR inconvenience, as it just meant using the key manually, but it took them a very long time to fix (at least two months).

The transfer box (gearbox as far as I can tell) has failed completely after only 28000 miles. This will cost £2000 to repair. I am absolutely gutted.

General Comments:

This is a lovely car to drive, comfortable, full of useful features and handles very nicely.

However the reliability for me has been very disappointing.

2004 Jaguar X-Type SE 2.0D

Summary:

Great

Faults:

Nothing.

General Comments:

Had the car for nearly 2 years - and no problems at all. It's great to drive, economical, the SE version is well spec'd and will get another one in a years time.

The car is as good as the advertisin says

2004 Jaguar X-Type SE 2.0 TD

Summary:

I would happily buy this type of car for the rest of my life

Faults:

One of the remotes doesn't work very well and has been repaired twice.

The boot does not always close first time.

The external temperature gauge failed.

The car was recalled by the manufacturer due to a potential fire risk of an electrical cable being too close to a hot part of the engine.

General Comments:

I love driving this car. It handles well, performs well and is seriously comfortable.

I also love all the features and toys it has with it eg heated seats, reverse park aid, cruise control.

It is the most economical car I have ever had, averages 40mpg, once I got 65mpg out of it over a long run cruising steadily at 55mph.

It only cost £115 for a years tax.

Insurance is cheap.

2004 Jaguar X-Type Diesel 2.0 turbo diesel

Summary:

Very good, very economic, great fun to drive

Faults:

Squeak from handbrake cable - fixed at dealers in first month.

General Comments:

This car is the SE version with folding mirrors, reversing aid, met paint and sat navigation (this is one thing that as a business driver I will never want to be without having had it, fantastic system, but £2,000 extra!)

Genuine 50+ mpg on a run, very economical and very quick!

Can't think of anything wrong with this car. Quick and economical with a good image, what more is there?

My car is gold with cream leather, must be the best colour way, have a look at it yourself!

I have the exact same car, colour, spec etc and when its good its very very good and when its bad, the dealer at Cardiff is hopless. Can't get jobs resolved, have to wait a month to get the car into the workshops. I will go back to a BMW just because I can't stand the hassle of Jaguar ownership.

That's from a bloke whos second car was an XK120 (long ago) e type, loads of MK2s etc this was my first new Jag (number 11!) what a shame!

I have now owned a 2 litre diesel SE for 3 years. The car is fantastic, never letting me down.

Yes, some of the comments are correct, the dealers could provide a better service.

There is a common fault with these cars, rust under the chrome boot strip, above the rear number plate. Therefore, when purchasing a second hand car check for this.

The cars are well designed, standing out in the crowd and very cheap to run. My brother bought a Sports Premium after driving my SE. Both he and I are so pleased with the cars that we will buy another Jaguar in a year or so.

PS my other car is a Mercedes C220 so I feel I can compare like with like.
