2005 Jaguar X-Type XS Estate 2.0 turbo diesel

Summary:

It's a good workhorse type of car, which looks good

Faults:

Ooooohhhhh... that's a difficult one. Really, the only things to really go wrong were the power steering pump, the rear suspension bushes and shocks, the headlight level adjuster knob, and that's really it. I have however, replaced a whole lot more. Prophylactically and in advance, as I hate impending doom.

General Comments:

Very good overall. Admittedly I bought with just over 100K on the clock and 5 years old. So, I've been replacing replaceables over the past 18 months, however, to its credit, it has never let me down. The bills aren't stupefying, however, with all the replaceables replaced, they have been a bit dear altogether. We are talking about clutch, DMF, rear suspension, power steering and water pump, accessory belt tensioner/crank pulley, plus various other bits and pieces. A fair old whack.

It gives about 40 MPG overall. I use it for both short and very long distance trips. It handles all well. It drives nicely enough. It handles snow and ice really well, despite being FWD. I do have winter tyres for it though.

The back seat isn't that spacious, so it's a good thing I drive it and my 3 year old sits in the back. Anyone older would not be very happy after a while.

The overall trim quality is acceptable. It's a bit of a Ford thing with a Jag badge, but I don't care. I like it overall. I'll keep it and polish it, and make sure it looks nice and new. Until it gives up the ghost on me. Mind you, considering all the replaceable replaceables, it'll be with me a while (I hope!).

2005 Jaguar X-Type Sovereign 2.2 turbo diesel

Summary:

Disappointing customer service; could do better

Faults:

Clutch failed at 32000 miles. Before the failure I felt vibration on the clutch pedal when it was depressed.

The problem came more severe when stuck in heavy traffic; I was unable to move out of gear, the clutch was still engaged and the car was creeping forwards despite the pedal being flat to the floor. Managed to select gears after pumping the clutch pedal several times, and continued my journey in heavy traffic.

Whilst concentrating on keeping the car going, I missed my hotel in the centre of Birmingham and drove past the local Jaguar dealership, only for the clutch to fail once and for all at a very busy roundabout, causing severe traffic congestion in the centre of Birmingham on the day that Manchester United were playing Birmingham City.

The car was eventually recovered to the Jaguar garage that I had driven past. I contacted Jaguar Assist to get a loan car, but was told that because the vehicle was not recovered by Jaguar, they would not supply a loan car.

4 days later I am still waiting for the car to be repaired and am paying for a hire car. So much for Jaguar's 3 year warranty and service. I will go for a Lexus next time.

General Comments:

My previous car was a Jaguar X type Saloon A.W.D 2.5 petrol; very quick and good handling. One problem was wear to the driver's leather seat after 7 months; Jaguar replaced the whole leather covering. Changed the car after two years because of increasing fuel cost; I was only getting a max of 38 mpg, so changed to a 2.2 turbo diesel.

The test car I drove was as quick as the 2.5 petrol, however my current car never feels as quick; in fact a loan car supplied when mine was serviced, again a 2.2 diesel, was much quicker. When I mentioned this to the garage, they said that they thought my car quicker than the loan car!!!

I would just like to say that no 'assist' program offered by manufacturers will give you a loan car if you take the car to the dealer. I once did the same with a Citroen, the dealer told me to drive 100yds down the road and call citroen assist as I would then get a loan car, strange, but true.

As for the sensation of acceleration, I believe you have simply gotten used to your Jag at its 2.2D is the fastest in its class.
