1978 Lancia Beta monte carlo 2.0

Summary:

Beautiful to look at, a nightmare to own

Faults:

It'd be easier to list things that hadn't gone wrong. Electrics are a nightmare. Turn the engine off after a long run & try to re-start it & it was down to luck whether it would start again. This car is the most unreliable machine I've ever owned.

General Comments:

The Monte Carlo is a fabulous looking car. It oozes class & is obviously styled by a top Italian design house (pininfarina, of course) but that's where the praise ends.

This car rotted infront of my eyes. I swear I could see it dissolving on my drive.

The handling in the wet was lethal. This car is a death trap. I managed to spin it on a greasy roundabout at a ridiculously low speed where other cars would simply stick to the road without drama. No wonder Lancia withdrew it so soon.

If you need new parts for a Monte Carlo, be prepared to sell your granny to raise the cash!

The Montecarlo, correctly set up and maintained, is a reliable and excellent handling motorcar, that only lacks a few extra BHP. It is a pleasure to own, always!

I disagree. It's wonderful to look at, but that's as good as it gets. Why else would Lancia drop it without further development? Road tests all pointed to the dangerous handling in the wet & the lethal brakes. The car was a dud. Shame, but true.

1984 Lancia Beta VX Coupe 2.0 Supercharged

Summary:

Slightly obscure classic that's great fun

Faults:

Problems with the automatic choke have made the car fussy and unreliable.

General Comments:

This is a great classic to own and looks stunning in black.

However the price of spares and finding spares is becoming more and more difficult.

The performance when running correctly is excellent.

The handling is superb as is the interior space and general feel of the car.

1983 Lancia Beta HPE 2.0 injection

Summary:

Lovely slim shape; if only it was cheaper to run

Faults:

Quite a few, but the problem was that I never had enaugh money to fix things properly.

Electrical bits are a bit of a pain and I had problems getting spare parts.

Rusty tank that I had to replace, but surprisingly no rust elsewhere.

General Comments:

Great shape, absolutely original.

Thirsty (petrol).

Good performance, handling.

A lot of room at the back.

I miss it, but I didn't have enaugh money to keep it.

I used it quite a lot, though, driving through Europe 3 times (from London to Austria, Italy, Corsica, etc)

1980 Lancia Beta Coupe 2.0

Faults:

Brake seals, big end bearings, all four struts have been replaced.

Rust around windscreen and rear strut mounts.

General Comments:

Excellent drive, by far the most torquey motor I've ever driven.

Unfortunately bits are not too easy to get but then again you can always scrap it and build a Stratos replica using the engine!
