1982 Land Rover 88 Station Wagon 2.25 NAD

Summary:

A real workhorse- indestructible and unbeatable off the road

Faults:

Engine and gearbox needed re-building when I got the car. I knew this before I bought it - I wanted something to tinker with.

Replaced rear springs- easy job.

Glow Plugs needed replacing.

One rear half-shaft snapped off-road.

Wipers sometimes work, sometimes they don't.

General Comments:

Although this car was built in 1982, it is pretty much identical to the Land Rovers being built in the 1950s. This means it drives like no other car on the road and takes some getting used to.

The ride quality depends on the condition of the springs. It as very harsh and bumpy when I got the car, but after I replaced two strings, it is now much better.

Top speed is about 60 mph, with a comfortable cruising speed of 50.

The seats are the Deluxe ones, which I find very comfy.

Off-road, this car is (like all Land Rovers) the best in the world. It has gone through mud, sand, water, and up and down hills you would be scared to walk up. It has never been stuck.

Mine will carry 7 people (bit cramped, but not too bad). If you want to do this, a roof rack is a must as there's no space left inside.

Fuel economy is about 25-28 mpg. I have managed 31 mpg when I actually tried.

1982 Land Rover 88 2.25L

Summary:

A man's LEGO set. Lots of fun

Faults:

Absolutely nothing has gone wrong with it. It rules. It could last forever, and is going to.

General Comments:

The Series three Land Rover is the best car I have owned so far... Hope to get an Austin Martin DB7 soon... Yeah right.

1977 Land Rover 88 2.25 petrol

Summary:

If you got to go anywhere - this is the car!

Faults:

Nothing went wrong in 30,000 miles.

General Comments:

Very basic, but practical workhorse.

I used it for everyday transport to work, and shops, and holidays etc...

Replaced all the wheel bearings and brake shoes when I bought this car - that's it - nothing went wrong.

100% reliable.

I did use it on the motorways - but very noisy and slow.

Average fuel consumption (2.25 litre petrol engine) was 22 mpg.

1979 Land Rover 88

Summary:

Original and still the best

Faults:

The rear quarter chassis required replacement as it was badly corroded and I almost snapped the rear cross member.

I replaced the springs and shocks, but worn through age not actually faulty.

A month after picking up the landrover I did a full service following an intensive off road session and was somewhat dismayed to find that the gear box was devoid of oil. Incedently one year and 8000 miles later I'm still using the same gearbox and yes its noisy.

General Comments:

Other than periodic niggles all of them age related particularly as the previous owner neglected to perform even basic maintenance. A truly reliable vehicle no matter what the weather she can be relied upon to start first time, only letting me down once and given the amount of clay in the distributor I'm willing to forgive that.

1967 Land Rover 88 Series 2A 2.25 petrol

Summary:

A cheap, classic 4 X 4

Faults:

The chassis requires a lot of work to pass the MOT.

Needs new rear section, outriggers and front sections.

Electrics were intermittent due to lose fuses, now sorted.

Needed new battery.

General Comments:

This is one reliable car, it always starts on the button.

Its easy to work on as all the mechanics are easly accessible.

Nicknamed it the tank as as driving it requires arms like a gorrilla to do three point turns!

Good car to restore as parts are cheap and easy to get hold of.

1975 Land Rover 88 Series 3 2.25 petrol

Faults:

New clutch, disintegrating rear wiring, 1 wheel bearing.

General Comments:

Great fun, the ONLY vehicle for towing a horse trailer, great once all the little niggles were sorted out.

Get an unleaded cylinder head - makes a big difference.

Running costs would get a 2 if we did more than 2,000 miles a year in it.

1979 Land Rover 88 Series III 88" SWB 2.25 petrol

Faults:

Clutch Master Cylinder Seals, Alternator, Drive Shaft UJ, Brake Shoes & Drums, Front Swivels, Track Rod Ends, Front & Rear Wheel Bearings & Hub Oils Seals.

Still Outstanding:- Pinion Oil Seals, Transfer Box Output Oil Seal & Piston Rings To Be Replaced.

General Comments:

All the above was carried out shortly after purchase from the original owner, a farmer. I suspect he took more care of the cattle than of the Landie!

There was no service history and I suspect there never was any service! As each new part is restored or replaced my beastie gets more & more lovable. She is not the cheapest to run but she is excellent fun.

1983 Land Rover 88 Series III SWB 2.25 petrol

Faults:

Clutch master cylinder failed; speedo needle was a bit erratic and optimistic (85mph in a series 3!); passenger door lock never worked.

General Comments:

My first Land Rover and damn good fun. Once I put on the balloon tyres and drawing pin steering wheel it did wonders for my biceps and I never used to lock it in London as no-one would have been able to drive it in anything but a straight line.
