1994 Mercedes-Benz C-Class C180 Elegance 1.8

Summary:

What a fantastic car

Faults:

Nothing.

General Comments:

What a wonderful car.

Reading other peoples' reviews, I must have the best C180 in the world. If you treat this car with care and put the best petrol you can get in it, not supermarket stuff as I did once, which did give me some running problems, the 1994 is in my mind the last of the well made Mercs. The metal is thicker, the carpets are thicker, and now after 20 years it has no rust at all.

It still drives like a new car, and I have driven a few as part of my work, and always look forward to getting back to my Polar White Merc with its white interior. My man that MoTs and services this fantastic car, tells me he has cars in that are only five years old that are in a condition that this Merc puts to shame.

Totally agree with this review, they are really good looking solid cars, last of the "real" Mercedes. Rust was an issue across all Mercedes of this generation however - that is all you need to look out for.

I've had my 1996 C200 for a while, has been a great car, even more reliable than my previous 190E believe it or not, will try to get a review up soon.

1994 Mercedes-Benz C-Class C180 Elegance 1.8

Summary:

Pleasurable and comfortable to drive

Faults:

Fuel pump at 250,000 miles.

Oil leak from crankshaft oil seal at 200,000 miles.

Wiper motor at 220,000.

Radiator expansion tank blown at 180,000.

Throttle body faulty at 378,000.

Main fuel line fractured at 290,000.

General Comments:

My father's car from new, and well maintained throughout.

It is still powerful and very quiet to drive.

Apart from above faults, and brakes and tyres, this vehicle has been incredible.

1994 Mercedes-Benz C-Class Classic 1.8

Summary:

Good car, but lacking the old MB quality

Faults:

Heater only blows hot air, can't turn heat off.

SRS sensor in steering wheel replaced. Light started flashing again 6 months later.

Headlight adjuster doesn't work.

General Comments:

Build quality and materials seem to be not as good as my old '80s 230CE.

Very smooth and quiet engine.

Drives well although steering seems too light causing it to constantly pull to the incline of the road.

1994 Mercedes-Benz C-Class 180 Classic 1.8

Summary:

Excellent car, but lacks the character of my old 190E

Faults:

Very little has gone wrong with this car.

There is a fault in the fuse box which meant that the indicators would occasionally not work - but I fixed this with some cleaning of the contacts!

I replaced the front and rear disks and pads within the last 10000 miles and now it stops like nothing else!

General Comments:

This is such a quiet car - when travelling along a country lane at 40mph with the window open you will hear the tyres rather than the engine!

Its not a sports car, but the torque is great - it is best at around 4k rpm - 90mph in 5th.

It could do with more legroom in the back - but as the driver, it's not my problem!

The model has very few toys, but then what it has works very well - you get what you pay for.

My mother has a 1995 C180(Elegance). The exhaust system has broken and the gearbox has just about broken, and there is a funny noise with the fans at the front when it changes gears; it's an Auto.

Also it gets very hot after a drive; the radiator is fine.

The wiper jammed up and the radio has broken.

There is also not a lot of power when taking off.

1994 Mercedes-Benz C-Class Classic C180

Summary:

Class leader

Faults:

Other than the Alarm failing in 96, nothing.

General Comments:

Reliability has been excellent although the car is serviced regarly by main dealer.

Slightly underpowered, but drives extremely smoothly and returns over 35mpg.

Although this is the base 'classic' and the interior has the no thrills trim, it's still put together well and has no rattles.

Reluctantly just traded it in for a new shape '01 C220cdi with I can only hope is as good!

1994 Mercedes-Benz C-Class C180 Classic 1.8

Summary:

Loads of status, but less pleasure

Faults:

Wrong tyres fitted caused it to pull to the left.

Head gasket (covered by the warranty).

Heater fan (covered by the warranty).

Brake discs.

General Comments:

Good cruising performance marred by a heavy accelerator, and poor auto box shift pattern.

Good handling spoilt by vague steering.
