1997 Mercedes-Benz C-Class C240 Elegance Estate 2.4 petrol

Summary:

The best!

Faults:

Nothing major in my two year ownership. Rust is becoming a problem (it is over 25 years old!) but that's also only because on closer inspection the car has had some rust repaired (poorly) over the years. I plan to fix this myself properly.

Interior surprisingly unmarked after all this time.

The car has had all the important mechanical work over the years and runs just fine even with mileage nearing 200,000! Never touch these cars without a full history. Mine has had every service since 1997, mostly from Mercedes garages.

General Comments:

When Mercedes was still Mercedes. This 1990's C-Class is a fine car to drive even today. Super comfortable and smooth, and great looking for an estate car. Silver metallic. Popular and best color.

It's not very economical, but I only use it as a second car. It is however fast and smooth, being a petrol automatic. Very nice to drive.

Interior is classic Mercedes-Benz. Super high quality materials that have stood the test of time. This Elegance model has leather, wood effect trim and all the electrics of the time. Spacious, comfortable, near perfect for me.

I wish Mercedes made cars this good again!

Choose colour carefully. Metallic grey is always the best.

Excellent performer.

The car is designed to suit compact car requirements. Users would appreciate the quality of materials used and fine workmanship. Although the car do not have powerful acceleration capabilities such as those possesed by BMW, SAAB, etc, once at high speed, the handling is fairly acceptable.

Faults:

It started leaking oil 10 months after I bought it. I was in Germany at the time but fortunately had a German speaker with me and so I was able to get it fixed under warranty, although we had to visit 3 dealerships to do so!

General Comments:

The car is a bit under powered but very comfortable. I have had experience of two dealers both of which have been totally incompetent which is why I'm unsure if I would buy another Mercedes.

Agreed they can tend to look down at you or ignore you if you don't wear a tie and some kind of smart dress. I wouldn't mind, but look beneath their uniform and they're a bit of a common lot too in some cases!

General Comments:

Very comfortable. 1997 model has improved looks and is better value for money. Can accelerate fast if pushed. Overall, it's a nice car.
