1980 Mercedes-Benz W123 230E 2.3 petrol

Summary:

Tough

Faults:

Power steering box (excess play).

Rust and water leaks to the interior now starting to take their toll.

Generally monotonously reliable! (but do keep it serviced)

General Comments:

A very pleasant, comfortable and super reliable car.

Quite economical and fast for its size and weight. I'm told 230E is the best engine for economy/power balance.

Cabin is well designed.

Only cost £1800 privately - what a bargain!

Previously a Jaguar / Volvo person I am now a Mercedes convert.

1979 Mercedes-Benz W123 230C 2.3 petrol

Summary:

An example of superb engineering

Faults:

Zero.

General Comments:

Rust, what is rust?

It's just a very good comfortable coupe with style and grace.

Always starts, firm, positive ride with a massive boot.

I am interested to know if it is the only 230C in the Mimoseb 618 colour?

1980 Mercedes-Benz W123 250 Saloon 2.5 petrol 6 cylinder

Summary:

Classic cruiser, tough as old boots apart from rust

Faults:

Rust! Lots of it, mostly sills. Water leakage into car body and boot.

Ticking camshaft due to one worn lobe, have not replaced as it works fine.

Drivers winding window.

Panel lights.

Auto transmission had slight hesitation problem in 30c+ Spanish heat, drained off some fluid and problem went away.

Vacuum operated central locking must be used within a minute of turning off the engine or else "loses" vacuum.

General Comments:

South African model, although only glass and interior were made in SA, most of car made in Germany.

Suspension is set for comfort rather than handling. Comfortable, roomy interior is basic, tough and hence in very good condition.

Only 3 gears so must be revved to keep up with modern traffic.

Rust will be the death of it.

Carb' the size of a dustbin! 15-19 mpg (imp') in UK, but oddly got 21-23 at 75mph+ on long runs across Spain!

1970s models often seem to have strange paint colours.

I have many German friends with these cars and the consesus is; 240D and 300D(non-turbo) are the strongest engines, manual 5 speed box always breaks, 4 speed box is unbreakable albeit a bit crude, they all rust after about 15 years.

Also they go a surprisigly long way off road when driven by young Germans who just don't care. Watch out for the sump though...

1985 Mercedes-Benz W123 280TE 2.8 petrol

Faults:

The drivers window is currently having an electrical problem where there is power to put the window up but not to put the window down. If I Keep my finger pressed on the down button and then at the same time lower the rear drivers side window, occasionally the drivers window will lower, therefore I suspect some kind of earthing problem.

Apart from that the car has had a clean sheet.

General Comments:

Very reliable, practical, and the build quality is exceptional. I feel very safe driving with my young daughter in the car.

The car is now twelve years old and is still going strong even with 190,000 miles on the clock! It still looks great, especially with all the chrome and it has all the extras in the book from Leather interior to heated seats.

I cannot recommend it enough and at £3500 I think it's an absolute bargain.

I believe that the problem with the window could possibly be a dirty connection in the fuse box. I have a 280TE myself and most of my electrical problems are a result in dirty connections in the fuse box. is your 280TE an autobahn car? I'm trying to figure out if there is a 3.8 liter engine for this vehicle. I'm not sure if I got a 3.8 of 2.8. I haven't looked hard, but interests me.

Forgive me if I have misunderstood what you say, but how is the 1985 car only 12 years old?

I have a 1985 280TE which I am thinking of selling which has been in family ownership throughout, but someone seemed to think £1,000 was too much to ask. Views welcome.

I think you were out of school when they did the maths lessons. The original comment was posted in 1997 and the car built in 1985. 1997-1985=12. If it is still around as I write this in 2004, it would be 2004-1985=19. Does this help explain the difference?
